lle it known that l, Jouw J. VAN VLir/r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago7 county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in hat pin point guards and has for its object the production of a device of this character which may be readily and quickly arranged in position over the point of a hat pin; one which may be readily and easily detached when desired; and one which shall be of economical construction and of great eiiicicncy in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
dlith these objects in view my invention consists in a hat pin guard characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim. y
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accon'xpanying dra'vvings forming a part of this ,specification and in which,

The preferred form of my construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a coni cal casing l formed of any suitable material, sheet metal being preferably used. Arranged axially within the casing l is an elongated tube 2 rectangular in cross section, one end of said tube being secured preferably byI soldering to the contracted end of said casing'. Arranged within the tube are normally curved leaf springs 3, said springs being so arranged that the conve'x sides thereof are adapted normally to contact with each other substantially inedially of the ends of said springs. 'lhe ends t of said. springs 3 are .secured preferably by soldering to the connected ends of the menibers l and '2, the opposite ends of said springs which project beyond the opposite extremity of said tube 2 being free.
ilrrangial at the contracted end of the casing l and the corresponding end of the tube 2 is a conical or flaring mouth piece 5 through which the point of the pin G is inserted in the arrxuigeinent of the device thereon, the provision of a mouth piece of this construction evidently facilitating the insertion of the pin point centrally into the tube 2.
Arranged at the free end of the casing 1 is a substantially he1ni-spherical head piece 'T secured preferably by soldering thereto. The head piece 7, when the device is in oph eration, serves as a stop lor the pin point upon insertion of the latter through the tube 2 between the springs 3. In addition to serving in this capacity the head 7 may also serve as an ornament since the same may be of any ornate or fanciful design de# sired.
Arranged at the inner end of the tube 2 is an angular end piece 48 formed ot a strip bent into V-shape and the ends of which are secured to said tube preferably by soldering so that the apex is at right angles to the plane of contact of the springs 8. The central portion of the member 7 is angularly formed as clearly shown in lfig. 3, the sides of this portion converging inwardly so that the line of intersection thereof will be disposed at right angles to the line of contactA between the springs 3. With this arrangeu nient it will be seen that upon insertior of the pin point through the niouth piece '5 and between the springs 3, said pin point if not disposed centrally in the tube Q will contact one of the sides of the end piece 7 which will deflect the saine toward the central opening t) in'said end piece and thus maintain the pin point centrally in said tube..
ln the employment of the device it will be observed that upon arrangexnenn thereof in operative position upon a pin point the springs (l will forcibly engage against the sides of the pin point serving to hold the device in position upon the pin by friction, sa id springs serving to maintain the device thereon. against accidental displacement but permitting of removal when draw outwardly by the hand. Having described my invention What I claim as newand desire to vsecure by Letters Patent is:
' A device of the class described, comprising a` tube, a conical mouth piece at one with said tube, a fiat strip traversing the oppositeend'of said tube and secured to the same, said :strip being bent into substantially 20 Vv-shape with its sides converging inwardly and provided with a perforation in its apex coaxial with said tube anda pair of normally curved leaf springs arranged in said tube with their convex sides contacting, the ends of said springs adjacent said mouth piece being fixed andthe opposit'eends being free and extending through the spaces between said` V-shaped strip 'and the end of 'said tube, and the apex of said V-shaped stripbeing at right angles to the plane of `the contact of said springs, substantially as described.
