SHADE-SUPPORT.
Application filed November 18, 1911.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1.912.
Serial No. 660,991.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Shade-Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to shade supports, and it has for its object to provide one with two telescopic members having brackets for carrying a shade roller, each of the members having lugs around which a cord is disposed so that the members are held firmly to the cord when the cord is drawn taut, the cord being disposed around pulleys which are mounted to permit of the cord being conveniently drawn taut, and the pulleys be ing so supported that they may be readily removed and replaced.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation showing a window frame provided with my improvement; Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view showing how the shade roller brackets are supported by the cords; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 1-1 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the studs used to support the roller shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is. an elevation, partially in section, showing a modified form of the invention; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 7 -7 of Fig. 6.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that each of the brackets 5, which are secured near the bottom of the window frame 6, is provided with two vertical channels 7 and 8, the terminal 9 of the stud 10 traveling in the channel 8, and the said stud 10, at its bent portion 11 traveling in the vertical channel 7. This stud 11 is bent downwardly, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and it has a threaded terminal 12, which extends through an opening 13 in the bottom of the bracket 5. A nut 14L meshes with the thread on the terminal 12 of the stud 10, and as this nut 14: presses against the bottom 15 of the bracket 5, it tends to hold the stud 10 down and the cord 16 taut, which is disposed on the pulley 17, mounted on the stud 1.0. At the top of the window frame 6 the brackets 18 are secured, each of these brackets 18 having sides 19 with openings 20, the sides of each of the openings 20 converging toward the center of the window frame. Disposed in the openings 20 in each of the brackets 18 there is a stud 21, the studs 21 having the transverse grooves 22 for receiving the edges of the brackets at the openings 20 so that the stud 21 may be disposed in the openings 20 at their widest ends, and when the studs are moved toward the center of the window frame, the grooves 22 in the studs 21 will fit the sides of the openings 20, and prevent the studs 21 from becoming displaced. iilounted on the studs 21 there are rollers 23. The cord 16 is disposed upwardly from the right-hand bracket 5, over the pulley 23, mounted on the stud 21, in the righthand bracket 18, then over the pulley 23 mounted on the stud in the left-hand bracket 18, then under the pulley 17 mounted in the left-hand bracket 5, then up and around the pulley in the left-hand bracket 18, coming out and across from the underside of the left pulley 23 to the underside of the right pulley 23 then around the right pulley 23 and down and under the pulley 17, mounted on the stud in the righthand bracket 5.
Ihe shade roller support consists of two telescopic members 24, each of which has a bracket 25, for supporting the shade roller. The members 24: are secured to the cord 16 by means of a lug 26, on each of the members 24:, and two lugs 27 on each of the members.
It will be seen by referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings that the lug 26 is disposed at one side of the line passing from one of the lugs 27 to the other, and that the cord 16 is disposed at one side of the members 24 and is engaged by the lugs 27, the cord between the lugs 27 passing to the other side of the member 24, and laterally to a position Where it is engaged by the lug 26. l/Vhen the cord is disposed around the lugs 26 and 27 in the manner described, and the cord is drawn taut by means of the nuts 14-, which draw downwardly on the studs 10, it will be found that tl z shade roller supporting members 2 1 will be held securely in position on the cord 16. One of the members 2 1 is secured to that portion of the cord 16 which extends from the left side of the left pulleys 23 and 17, and the other member 2 1 is secured, in the manner described, to that portion of the cord 16 which extends from the left side of the right-hand pulleys 23 and 17 as shown in Fig. 6. A hand cord 16 is secured to the cord 16, by which means the cord 16 may be moved over the pulleys in the manner well understood. Mounted on the brackets 25 in the customary manner, there is a shade roller 28, carrying a shade 29.
The construction shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings corresponds in most respects with the construction shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, but it will be observed that to the terminals 16 of the cord 16*, there are secured the terminals 30 of a chain 31, this chain passing around a sprocket wheel 32, mounted on a stud 33, journaled in bearings 34 in a bracket 35. The stud 33 is rotated by a wheel 36 and secured to the stud there is a disk 37 having projections 38 for engaging the head 39 of a pin 40. By rotating the wheel 36 the cord 16 may be moved over the pulleys in a manner readily understood, to raise or lower the members 24 and the brackets 25, which support the shade roller.
It will be understood that the disk 37 is resilient, and that as the projections 38 engage the head '39 on the pin 40, they will serve to hold the pin and the cord relatively to the pulleys, until the operator is desirous of changing the elevation of the shade roller.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a shade support a member having a shade roller supporting means, two lugs spaced apart and projecting laterally at one side of the member, and a third lug disposed at one side of a line extending from one of the first-mentioned lugs to the other firstmentioned lug, and projecting laterally at the other side of the member.
2. In a shade support a bracket having two vertical channels and an opening at its bottom, a stud disposed across the bracket for traveling in the channels, the stud being bent downwardly and having a. threaded terminal disposed through the opening, a nut meshing with the thread on the terminal and engaging the bracket, a pulley mounted on the stud, a second pulley, a cord disposed around the pulleys, and a shade roller carrying means supported by the cord.
3. In a shade support two brackets each having two vertical channels, and an opening at its bottom, a stud disposed across each of the brackets for traveling in the channels, the studs being bent downwardly and having threaded terminals disposed through the openings, nuts meshing with the threads on the terminals for engaging the brackets, additional pulleys, a cord disposed around the pulleys, two members each having lugs around which the cord is disposed so that when the cord is drawn taut by turning the nuts against the brackets, the members will be supported by the cord, and shade roller carrying means, secured to the members.
4. In a shade support a bracket with two sides having openings with sides which converge in one directlon, a stud adapted to be inserted in the openings at their widest ends, and being provided with grooves for fitting the sides of the openings when the stud is moved toward the other end of the openings, a pulley mounted on the stud, another pulley, a cord disposed around the pulleys, and a shade roller carrying means supported by the cord. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. r
