JOHN J. COLLIER, OF RENAULT, ILLINOIS.
DESK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,663, dated January 13,1891.
Application filed March 20, 1890. Serial No. 344,638. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. COLLIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Renault, in the county of Monroe and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to desks.
The object of my invention is to construct a desk that can be used as a sitting desk or raised to any desired height and used as a standing desk, and, if desired, its upper or writing surface can be inclined; and to this end the nature of my invention consists of constructions and combinations, all as will hereinafter be described in the specification, and particularly pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 2, a section through y y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a side View showing the top or writing surface raised.
A represents the frame'of the desk, upon which is hinged a movable top a, having a ledge a. hinged to its upper end, and to said ledge a hinged back a a is a screw, which is preferably countersunk in the top a, so that it will not interfere with the material to be written upon, and its lower end is extended through said top a and a brace 0. on the under side of said top. This brace a is secured at each end to the frame A of the desk, and is provided with a screw-plate a in which the screw a works, said screw being provided with a nut a", for the purpose hereinafter described.
B B are the desk-legs, which are secured at their upper ends to the frame A and cut away at b for the insertion of pulleys b.
B B are movable or sliding legs loosely secured to the desk-legs B by means of clips b and 19 The clips 17 surround the sliding legs B and are rigidly secured at b to the desk-legs B, while the clips 19 surround the desk-legs B and are rigidly secured to the sliding legs B at b so as to allow said slid-. ing legs to freely move up and down.
0 is a shaft, which is journaled in the sides of the frame A, and is provided at one end with a pawl c, ratchet c, and a crank-handle c for revolving said shaft.
Secured to shaft 0 at each end are two wheels D, having grooves d (1 cut in their periphery, and in which is secured one end of a wire or cord E, and the other end of said wire or cord is passed over the pulleys e, secured to the sides of the frame A, and then under the pulleys Z), inserted in the ends of the desk-legs B and secured to the inside upper end of the sliding legs B, so that when the wire or cord is tightened by the revolution of the shaft 0 and wheels D it will cause the sliding legs B to be drawn out.
The operation is as follows: To raise the desk to a standing desk turn the crank-handle c on the end ofthe shaft O, which will cause the wheels D to revolve and wind the wire or cord E about said wheels and tighten the same, and by means of the pulleys eand b the sliding legs B will be freely drawn out. WVhen the deskis at the height desired, the shaft 0 is prevented from reversely rotating by the engagement of the pawl with the ratchet. To incline the top or writing surface place the crank-handle 0 over the top of the screw a and revolve the screw in the screwplate a which will, by means of the nut a cause the top to rise to anyincline desired.
What I claim is In a desk, the combination of the frame A, fixed legs B, secured to said frame and having pulleys b in their lower ends, clip 6 secured to said fixed legs B, sliding legs B, having clip 17 secured thereon, shaft 0, journaled in frame A and having wheels D secured thereon at each end, wire or cord E, secured to said wheels D and passing over pulleys e and under pulleys Z2 and secured to sliding legs B for operating said slidinglegs, crank-handle c on one end of said shaft 0 for operating said shaft, and the pawl and ratchet for retaining the shaft in position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN J. COLLIER.
