JAMES BOOKER, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CKLIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN H. HENDERSON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
ROUND-TOP EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N v. 18, 1913.
To (ZN whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES BooKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Round Top Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a round table of such construction that it can be extended or enlarged when greater capacity is needed, and can be folded or reduced'in size when the smaller size is more convenient, in both cases retaining its circular form.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved table extended; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section showing in bottom plan view the top of the table partly extended and partly folded or collapsed; Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, except that the folding leaf is in its intermediate position, not fully extended; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of an extension arm.
Referring to the drawing. 1 indicates a base, supported upon casters 2, and in which is fitted a standard 3. On the top of said standard, and supported thereby, is a hub 4 confined by bolts 5 between two metallic plates or disks 6, 7 A bolt 8 passes centrally through said disks, hub, standard, and base, and upon the lower end of said bolt is screwed a nut 9, whereby said bolt secures all of said parts together. From said hub extend radially, at equal angular intervals, six horizontal arms 11, upon which arms, and upon the hub 4, rests.tlie table top proper 12. Said top is circular in form, and has hinged thereto, each by two hinges 13 on the under side thereof, three extension leaves 14. Each leaf 14 is directly hinged to the under side of the table top 12, and is of a general arcuate shape, of uniform width throughout its length, and ,of such a form that, when it is swung on its hinges so as to lie in the same plane as the table top 12, its inner arcuate edge, adjacent to said hinges 13, will fit closely against the edge of the table top, the'outer edge will be in a circle havingthe same center as the table top 12, and its terminal edges will extend radially Irom said center. \Vings 16, similar in term to the leaves 14 except that they are only ofone-half the length, are hinged, as
shown at 17, to each leaf at the radially extending ends of the latter, springs 18 being provided to move the wings upward into place. \Vhen each leaf, and the wings hinged thereto, are thus extended so as to lie in the plane of the table top, they extend around through an angle of 120, so that, when all of said leaves and wings are so placed, they form an annular extension of uniform width around the table top, and the extended table top is still circular in form, but of greatly increased diameter.
Each arm 11 is formed in the upper side with a longitudinal channel extending substantially its whole length, and in which can slide an extension arm 38, to the inner endof each extension arm is connected the inner end of a coiled spring 19, which can move in a groove 21 formed in the top of said extension arm, and the outer end of whicl 'is connected to the under side of the table top proper 12. sion arms, when extended, lie beneath, and support, the central portion of the leaves 14, while the other three, alternating with the former three, lie beneath and support the adjacentouter edges of the wings 16. In order to insure the wings and leaves making, when extended, closely fitting joints with the table top 12, so that the extended table top will have a plane upper surface, their ends, when extended engage spring plates 22 secured on the under sides of said leaves and wings.
In order to retain -each extension arm ,in
Three of these extenits collapsed position against the action of k its spring. 19, said arm is formed on one side with a socket 2 4 which is adapted to be engaged by a' la ching lever 25 pivoted, as shown at '26, on the under side of the central portion 12, and passing through a hole 27 win the side of the corresponding radially extending arm 1l,the other arm of which lever 1S pressed in a direction to normally cause said latch 25 to enter said socket 24 by a IQQ ring 34 surrounds the standards 3, and is supported thereon by screws 35 passing through slots 36. From said ring extend upwardly arms 37, which in one position of said ring extend beneath said leaves-when in their folded position. By revolving said ring through the length of said slot, said arms are moved to sucha position that they no longer support said leaves, which can then be extended.
I claim 1. In a round top extension cable, the combination of a central standard, a hub thereon, arms radiating rigidly from saidhub, a round table top supported by said arm, extension leaves having inner and outer curved edges, each leaf being hinged to the under side of the table top in a line through the ends of the inner edge of said leaf, terminal wings hinged to each extension at its ends, extension arms guided by said first-named arms for supporting alternately said leaves and wings, springs for projecting said extension arm, and latches for holding said extension arms in their retracted position,
side of the table top in a line through the ends of the inner edge of said leaf, terminal wings hinged to each extension at its ends.
extension arms guided by said first-named arms for supporting alternately said leaves and wings, springs on the under sides of said wings and leaves, adapted to be en gaged by the upper sides of said extension arms when extended.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
