Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE M. BLAND- FORD, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve- -5 ment in Garment-Hanger Supports, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to extensible garment-hanger supports, and has for its object to improve the construction of the same to the end that it may be extended and retracted easily and quickly; that when extended its outer or extension arm will be securely held, and the hanger-engaging notches of both the main or inner arm and its extension will occupy the same plane so that the full complement of hanger-engaging notches in both arms may be utilized; that when retracted said outer or extension arm will be so supported, and by its novel construction will be so arranged with respect to the inner arm, as not to interfere with the use of the full complement .of hanger-engaging notches of the inner arm, thereby providing in a single article of manufacture a short garment-hanger support capable of supporting a few garment-hangers and a long garment-hanger support capable of supporting many garment-hangers, the arms of which may be made quite slender yet deep notches provided therein to receive the hangers.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the garment-hanger support embodying this invention, the same being represented as extended. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the support shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the garment-hanger support, the same being represented as retracted. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the support shown in Fig. 3.

The garment-hanger support consists essentially of two elongated arms, pivotally connected together to provide for the extension and retraction of the support, a representing the inner arm and b the outer arm and c the pivot by which said arms are connected together. The inner arm a is here shown as having at its inner end a foot a provided with screw-holes a and also a central screw a which provides for the at- 0 tachment of the support to a wall or other object. The two arms are arranged to overlap each other so that when the outer arm is retracted it will occupy a position at the side of the inner arm, in parallelism therewith.

5 The inner arm has stops at each end for the engagement therewith of engaging-portions on the outer arm, said stops serving to hold said outer arm in its extended and retracted positions. As here shown, said inner arm has at its outer end a notch 66*, which is formed in the lower edge of the arm, back of the pivot c, and the outer arm has its inner end extended beyond the pivot c and at the end of said extended portion a laterally projecting pin Z) is formed or provided which is arranged to enter said notch a and engage the bottom wall thereof when the outer arm is in its extended position, to thereby securely hold said arm in such position.

The pivot 0 is arranged midway between the notch a and the outer end of the inner arm, so that as the outer arm is swung on the pivot into its retracted position said pin 6 will pass by the outer end of the inner arm. The inner arm is formed or provided at its inner end, near the foot, with a shoulder a having an inclined engaging-face and the outer end of the outer arm is beveled, as shown, to engage said inclined shoulder when in its retracted position. Thus the outer arm will be securely held in its retracted position. By overlapping the arms and pivotally connecting them together as here shown, said outer arm may be moved into a position beside and in parallelism with the inner arm when in its retracted position. The two arms are made of substantially the same thickness so that the upper edges there-- of will occupy the same plane when the support is extended, and they are each provided along their upper edges with a series of hanger-engaging notches, any desirable number being employed, which are suitably spaced apart to provide for holding garment-hangers more or less separated.

To provide for utilizing the full complement of notches of both arms when the support is in extended position, the inner endmost notch in the outer arm is arranged opposite the outer endmost notch in the inner arm, as shown. To provide for utilizing the full complement of notches in the inner arm when the outer arm is in its retracted position, the lower edge of the outer arm is provided with notches corresponding in shape and position to the notches in the upper edge of the inner arm, so that said notches in the lower edge of the outer arm will occupy positions opposite the notches in the upper edge of the inner arm. Unless the arms are thus provided with extra notches, as shown, they cannot be constructed as shown, and the full complement of notches of both arms utilize-d when the support is in its extended position and the full complement of notches of the inner arm utilized when the support is in its retracted position, therefore it is important that such extra notches be provided.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An extensible garment-hanger support consisting of a stationary inner arm having means at its inner end for securing it to a wall and for holding it in forwardly extended position and having a stop at each end and also having a plurality of notches arranged along its upper edge, and a movable outer arm, arranged alongside of the inner arm, and pivoted to the outer end thereof and having an engaging portion at each end for respectively engaging the stops on the inner arm, when in extended and folded positions, and having a plurality of notches arranged along both its upper and lower edges, the notches in the lower edge being arranged to occupy positions opposite the notches in the upper edge of the inner arm when the outer arm is in folded position, substantially as described.

2. An extensible garment-hanger support consisting of a stationary inner arm having means at its inner end for securing it to a wall and for holding it in forwardly extended position and having a stop at each end and also having a plurality of notches arranged along its upper edge, and a movable outer arm, arranged alongside of the inner arm, and pivoted to the outer end thereof, and having an engaging portion at each end for respectively engaging the stops on the inner arm, when in extended and folded positions, and having a plurality of notches arranged along both its upper and lower edges, the innermost notch in its upper edge being arranged to occupy a position opposite the outermost notch in the inner arm when the outer arm is in extended position, and the notches in the lower edge of said outer arm being arranged to occupy positions opposite the notches in the upper edge of the inner arm when said outer arm is in folded position, substantially as described.
