To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EnwiN E. HILL and ELLIs S. GRAY, citizens of the United States, both residing at I armington, in the county of Stratford and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Racks or Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in racks, and relates particularly to an improved construction of rack for use in the lasting room of shoe factories, although it is to be understood that the invention is applicable for other purposes generally.

The invention has for its primary object an improved construction of rack for use in handling shoe counters, to take the place of the boxes or paper bags which are commonly employed for such purpose, and effectually preventing the mixing of sizes, or miscounts, the rack taking up very little room, and saving considerable time in the handling of shoe counters.

With this and other objects in View that will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arragements of the parts that we shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.

For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure l is a perspective View of a rack or holder constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view, the section being taken approximately on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the wire rod which forms one side portion of a rack which is bent to the form hereinafter specifically described.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.

IVhile it is to be understood that our improved holder for shoe counters or other articles, may consist of a single rack or a plurality of racks combined, we have, in the present instance, illustrated an embodiment of our invention wherein three racks are combined, the said racks being designated A.

Specification of Letters Patent.

The racks A respectively comprise pairs of baserods arranged in spaced and parallel relation to each other and designated 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 respectively. \Vith each pair of base rods there is a co-acting retaining rod, the same being designated 7, 8 and 9 respectively. The retaining rod of each rack bears an offset relation to the base rods thereof, extending substantially parallel therewith, but occupying a different plane, as clearly illustrated in the drawing, the rack being thereby substantially triangular in cross section. Each rack is provided with a sliding hook 10 designed to engage the corresponding retaining rod to hold it clamped against the shoe counters or similar devices or articles laid upon the base rod of the rack.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the plurality of racks shown, are held together to form one frame-like structure, and all of the parts are constructed of wire of suitable strength and thickness, although it is to be understood that any desired material may be used in the formation of the rack, and it is also to be understood that the racks may be of any desired size as well as any desired number. In the present instance, the wires that form the outermost base rods 1 and 6 of the rack, are extended toward each other at their upper ends, with their extremities twisted together and bent to form a suspension hook 11 by which the device may be suspended from a last cabinet or any other desired support. The lower end of the wire forming the outermost base rod 1 is bent inwardly and in a plane oblique to the plane of the completed frame, as indicated at 1*, while the lower end of the adjacent base rod 2 is correspondingly bent, as indicated at 2 the two meeting portions of these wires being twisted together, as indicated at 12", and one of the wires being continued upwardly to form the retaining rod 7 of that rack. The upper end of the rod 2 is twisted around the portion 1 of the rod 1. In like manner, the upper ends of the rods 3 and 4 are twisted around the portions l and 6 while the lower ends 3 and 4 of the base rods 3 and 4 are angularly disposed like the ends l and 2 and are twisted together, as indicated at 8%, one of them being continued upwardly to form the retaining rod 8. Correspondingly, the upper end of the base rod 5 is twisted around the portion 6*, While the lower end 5 of said rod and the lower end 6 of the rod 6 are angularly disposed and are twisted together as at 56, one of them being continued upwardly to form the retaining rod 9.

The hooks 10 are formed with eyes 10 and with bills 10*, the eyes being slidingly mounted on the base rods so that the hooks may be moved along the same to engage different portions of the retaining rods to hold the counters at different places on the racks.

The lower ends of the several racks may be connected together in properly spaced relation by means of a tie rod 12 which is looped around the twisted portion 3%? of the rods 3 and 4, and hooked around the twisted portions l2 and 56 respectively.

Having thus described the invention, what we claim is:

1. A rack embodying base rods, a retaining rod connected at one end thereto, and a hook slidingly mounted on the base rods and designed to engage different portions of the retaining rod.

2. A rack embodying base rods, a retaining rod connected therewith, and a hook provided with eyes by which it is mounted to slide on the base rods and formed with a bill designed to engage different portions of the retaining rod.

3. A device of thecharacter described, embodying a frame consisting of outer rods having their upper ends extended inwardly toward each other and connected and bent to? form a hook, the lower ends of said rods being angularly disposed, other rods connected at one end to the inwardly extending portions of the first named rods and extending parallel with the main portions thereof and I formed at their lower ends with angularly disposed portions connected to the angularly disposed portions of the first named rods, one of the rods being continued upwardly from the connections just mentioned, whereby to form a retaining rod, and hooks coacting with said rods.
