Description

OSWALD SILBERRAD, OF BUGKHUBST HILL, ENGLAND.
.PEBCHLOBATE EXPLOSIVE.
No Drawing Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application filed June 15, 1911. Serial No. 638,407.
ammonium perchlorate and a nitro-body such as nitro-toluene.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved explosive of this nature and more particularly one which shall be plastic, powerful, cheap and of exceptional stability.
Explosives consisting of a perchlorate and a jelly of a nitro compound and soluble nitro-cellulose have been proposed but these owing to their lack of stability have not come into use. The explosive according to the present invention belongs to this class but is however free of this disadvantage.
This invention consists in an explosive containing 63 to 70 parts of ammonium perchlorate, 12 to 14: parts of nitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of dinitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of nitronaphthalene, up to 6 parts of wood meal and 0.5 to 2.5 parts of soluble nitrocellulose.
In carrying this invention into eifect according to one form the various nitro and dinitro compounds are incorporated together, the soluble nitro-cellulose added thereto and the mixture warmed until gelatinization is complete. The wood meal and oxidizing substance are now incorporated into the mass when the substance may be pressed into cartridges in the usual way.
In carrying my invention into effect, it is obvious that I may substitute the nitrotoluene (nitro methyl benzene) either partly or wholly by its analogue nitro benzene inasmuch as the product in both cases is to all intents and purposes identical.
An explosive composed of the ingredients set out above and prepared in the manner described has been found to possess remarkable stability, power, plasticity and efiiciency generally.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is .1. A blast-ing explosive containing ammonium perchlorate 63 to 70 parts, nitrotoluene 12 to 14 parts, dinitrotoluene 6 to 7 parts, nitronaphthalene '6 to 7 parts, wood meal up to 6 parts and soluble nitro-cellulose 0.5 to 2.5 parts; as set forth.
2. A plastic blasting explosive composed of nitro compounds gelatinized by soluble nitro-cellulose and having an oxidizing substance admixed therewith in which the jelly is composed of 12 to 14 parts of nitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of dinitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of nitronaphthalene and 0.5 to 2.5 parts of soluble nitro-cellulose, 63 to 70 parts of ammonium perchlorate and up to -6 parts of wood meal being incorporated in said jelly; as set forth.
3. The method of producing a plastic blasting explosive conslsting in mixing together 12 to 14 parts of nitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of dinitrotoluene and 6 to 7 parts of nitronaphthalene, adding thereto 0.5 to 2.5 parts of soluble nitro-cellulose, producing gelatinization of this mixture by the action of heat and incorporating with the resultant product 63 to 70 parts of ammonium perchlorate and up to 6 parts of wood meal; as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
