Description

OSWALD SILBERRAD, 0F BUGKHURST HILL, ENGLAND.
CHLORATE EXPLOSIVE.
No Drawing.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1912.
Application filed June 15, 1911. Serial No. 633,406.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSWALD SILBERRAD, a
"subject oif'"the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at Silberrad Research Laboratory, Buckhurst Hill, in the county of Essex, England, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Chlorate Explosive, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to explosives of the kind containing an oxidizing salt such as potassium chlorate and a nitro body such as nitro-toluene.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved explosive of this nature and more particularly one which shall be plastic,
owerful, cheap and of exceptional staility.
Explosives consisting of a chlorate and a jelly of a nitro compound and soluble nitrocellulose have been proposed but these owing to their lack of stability have not come into use. The explosive according to the present invention belongs to this class but is however free of this disadvantage.
This invention consists in an explosive containing 65 to 70 parts of potassium chlorate, 12 to 13 parts of nitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of dinitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of nitronaphthalene, 5 to 6 parts of wood'meal and 0.5 to 2.5 parts of soluble nitrocellulose.
In car ying this invention into effect according to one form the various nitro and dinitro compounds are incorporated together, the soluble nitrocellulose added thereto and the mixture warmed until gelatinization is complete. The wood meal and oxidizing substance are now incorporated into the mass when the substance may be pressed into cartridges in the usual way.
In carrying my invention into efiect it is obvious that I may substitute the nitrotoluene (nitro methyl benzene) either partly or wholly by itsanalogue nitro-benzene inasmuch as the product in both cases is to all intents and purposes identical.
An explosive composed of the ingredients set out above and prepared in the manner described has been found to possess remarkable stability, power, plasticity and efficiency in general.
Having now described my invention what I claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A blasting explosive containing potassium chlorate 65 to 70 parts, nitro-toluene 12 to 13 parts, dinitrotoluene 6 to 7 parts, nitronaphthalene 6 to 7 parts, wood meal 5 to 6 parts and soluble nitro cellulose 0.5 to 2.5 parts; as set forth.
2. A plastic blasting explosive composed of nitro compounds gelatinized by soluble nitro-cellulose and having an oxidizing sub-- stance admixed therewith in which the jelly is composed of 12 to 13 parts of nitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of dinitrotoluene, 6 to 7 parts of nitronaphthalene, and 0.5 to 2.5 parts of soluble nitro-cellulose, 65 to 70' parts of potassium chlorate and 5 to 6 parts of woo meal being incorporated in said jelly; as set forth. I
3. The method of producing a plastic blasting explosive consisting in mixing together 12 to 13 parts of nitro toluene and 6 to 7 parts of dinitrotoluene, and 6 to 7 parts of nitronaphthalene, adding thereto 0.5 to 2.5 parts of soluble nitro-cellulose, producing gelatinization of this mixture by the action of heat and incorporating with the resultant product 65 to 70 parts of potassium chlorate and 5 to 6 parts of wood meal; as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my OSWALD SILBERRAD.
