Description
N. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, n C.
ithtited gisten @stent (fettine.
nIoHARoJAoIIsoN oUNDInr, on LyNoHBUae, VIRGINIA.
Letters Patent No. 103,992, dated Jane 7, 1870.
auw- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the sameA To all whom lt may concern:
Be it known that I, Rial-JARD JACKSON Gunmen, of Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented a new and improved Combined Abdominal and Back-Supporter and Truss; and I do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description' of the construction and operation of the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1is a view in perspective of the three parts, and i Figure 2 is a front elevation of the pivoted bar, truss, and supporter.
lhe invention consists in combining a spring bar, first, with a truss and abdominal supporter; second, with -a truss and back-supporter; third, with truss, abdominal supporter, and back-supporter; and, further, it consists in securing the truss-pads to the spring bar by means ot' a shank and two bent elastic rods.
In the drawing- A is the elastic bar, pivoted at its center, so as to swing freely upon the abdominal supporter B, as seeli in fig. 2, or the herniatruss c C, as seen in fig 1.
D is the back-supporter, constructed in the ordinary manner, and connected, by side straps el, withl the ends ofthe bar A, in such manner as, with the latter,-
to hold the abdominal snpporter'or hernia pad in one place upon the'wearers body, without other movement than that due to the inhalation or exhalaticn of t-he breath or other muscular action, to which the supporter or pad yields readily, by reason of the elasticity of bar A, while-the latter moves upon its pivot to accommodate itself to the lateral motions of the body. l
Thus, without anymore discomfort to the wearer than is caused by any pador supporter, these devices, by my arrangement, are held firmly in the required place, and a support for the back is also afforded,'very' remedial in cases of` lameuess or spinal curvature.
The abdominal supporter 'is constructed in the usual manner, oa metallic foundation, to which padding is attached on. one side, and a leather cover on the other. To the metal foundation is aixed, in this instance, an iron cross-bar, in which are drilled any desired number of holes, b b, which'are threaded, for .the reception of screws, apertures heilig made 1n the leather cover for the insertion of the latter,'by means of which to attach the elastic bar and the connectingrod c ofthe hernia pads high or low 0n the abdominal supporter, as may be required.
The bars A and c may be attached separatelydirectly to the abdominal supporter, or the bar c may be welded upon a shank, c', provided with a series of holes, which shank is screwed to the supporter, and has the bar A screwed to it, as seen in tig.' 2, or the bar c, with its pads and pivoted bar A, may bewholly removed from the supporter, as in .warm weather, or when hernial remedy only is required.
The rod c is elastic in all directions, s0 as to impart the proper yieldingness'to the pads C, which latter are afxed to the ends of -the rod by means of screws,
and may be set at any inclination to snit the wearer.
'.lhe shank c', instead of being'welded upon the bar e, may be made separate, and may be fastened tothe bar e, when occasion requires, by the same screw that connects it with the supporter.
Having thus described my invention,
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, i's--.
1. The bar A, combined with the trussC, connecting-rod c, and shank c', in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The bar A, abdominal supporter B, and hernia truss c C, combined substantially as and for the object explained.
3. 'lhe hernia truss e C,-bar A, and back-supporter D, combined substantially in the manner and with the intent described.
4. The bar A, abdominal supporter B, hernia truss c C, and back-supporter D, combined substantially as and with the intent stated.
RICHARD JACKSON CUNDIFF.
