Description
ENT OICE.
EPHRAIM GOLVIN, OF NORTH GRANVILLE, NEW YORK.
UTERINE SUPPORTER.
Speccation of Letters Patent No. 4,134, dated .August 4, 1845.
To all whom z't'mcg/ concern Be it known that I, EPHRAIM CoLvrN, of North Granville, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have made a new and useful Improvement in the ll/lanner In my uterine supporter I employ an ab-i dominal, or hypogastric, and a perineal pad, such as have been in'general use in such instruments, and these I connect together by buckles and straps, furnished with spiral springs in such manner as readily to adjust and adapt the instrument to the body of the patient. My improvement in this appa.- ratus consists, mainly, in the manner in which I have combined a spring lever with the hypogastric, or abdominal, pad, which lever is so arranged as that by loosening, or tightening, the straps which are attached to it, the pad may be made to press with increased, or with diminished, force on its lower portion. The whole instrument, also, is so constructed as to set easily in every position of the body, the counteracting pressure being made principally upon the hips,
instead of upon the lower portion of the spine, as is usually the case. Its ease ot adaptation is such as to enable the patient to lie down without experiencing any inconvenience from the continued wearing of it. The pressure may be readily graduated in any desired degree, and the perineal pad is not liable to shift from its place, the whole instrument acting with the motion of the muscles.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l, is a perspective view of the whole instrument; and Fig. i2, a section through the abdominal pad, and spring lever, in the line of Fig. l.
A, A, is the abdominal pad, and B, the
spring lever. This lever is trmly attached,
by its upper end, to the Jfoundation plate of the pad, A, and it is bent so as to form a spring catch, as shown in the section B, Fig. 2. Upon the plate of the pad, A, is attached a notched piece of metal, C, which serves as a ratchet for the upper end of the piece, B, to catch in, so as to bear the part- B, out to a greater or a lesser, distance from the pad plate. On thelower end of the piece B, there is a stud, or button, a, for attaching the lower pair of straps, D, D, to the abdominal pad. By this arrangement, the lower part of said pad may be made to press with the required force, which may be altered at pleasure. The straps, D, D, and the pair E, E, which latter button on to the upper part of the pad A, are furnished with spiral springs at ZJ, L, where they 0in the main strap that surrounds the body. The back pad, F, and the side pads, Gr, Gr, that bear on the hips, are made soft and yielding.
H, is the perineal pad, which does not differ from those previously in use.
The main strap, I, I, that surrounds the body, is divided into two parts, which are united by suitable straps and buckles at `the back of the back pad, F.
Having thus fully described the manner in which I construct my abdominal supporter, for the cure, or relief, of prolapsus uteri, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combining with the hypogastric, or abdominal, pad, a spring lever, such as is shown at B, B, in the accompanying drawing, in such manner as that it may be used to increase, or to diminish, the pressure on the lower part of said pad, by an arrangement substantially the same with that herein fully made known.
