' To all whom it mag/ concernf Beit known that I, FRANK F. Bassefr'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lawrence, in the county. of Nassau and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Radiator-Shield, of which the following is a full, clear,`andv exactdescription. 1 i
This invention relates to anew and improved shield for radiators, of a4 type. used in automobiles, and is 4adaptedto cover a portion of the radiator and protect' it from the cold, so as to prevent an excessive `cooling of thewater in the radiator, and also to prevent the freeiing of the water when the radiator is'not in use.
An object of this invention isl to provide a radiator Shield which can be readily' attached to, or detached from, any style of radiator, and which, willA be simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture,
strongr and.,durable.
A further object of this invention is to l -provide a radiator shield which is so con- 25 .structed that it can be cut to tit any number of 'styles of radiator, and which may' be made flexible, so that when not in use, ity
can be rolled up in a small compass.` These and further objects, together with the'construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

to which my device is adapted to be. attached; In this case, the radiator is shown as honeycombed, but my device is adapted to be attached to any other type of radiator.

The radiator shield includes an apron 2 and si'xpporting members 3, which are adupted to hold the apron to the face oivthe radiator. The apron 2 may be of any suitable structure and material, such as a sheet of metal, but is preferably formed of one or more layersvof fabric 4. In this instance, the body of the apron is shown as comprising two layers 'of fabric, with thev exception of portions at the upper corners, where a reinforcingr layer 5 is interposed between the 'Ihe purpose of this reinforcing layer 5 is to permit thel corners to be cut oli to any desired "inclination, seras to conform to the contour of different forms of radiators. The supporting members 3 may be of any suitable character, and in this instance are shown in the form of bolts 7 which extend through openings in the radiator, from front to back, and are provided with snapheads S in their front ends, which are adapted to engage snap sockets E) located at suitable spaced intervals on'the apron Q. bolts 7 may be kept out of contact with thc metallic portion of the radiator, so as to prcvent injury to the same, by means of a flexible sleeve 10; which in this instance is shown as being made of rubber, but may be made of any other suitable material.

This difficulty is overcome by locating the snap-head 8 eccentricallyY with respect to the shank f the bolt 7, vas will be seen more clearly by reference to Figs 3 and L1. It will be seen 'by this arrangement that the position 'of the snap-head lrelative to the socket can be ad justed by merely rotating the supporting members 3 so as to bring the snap-head into direct alinement with the socket.
'The utility of the device will be readily understood'when taken in connection with the abovev description. The supports 3 are inserted in theradiator with which it is de-v sired' to use this shield', and the apron secured thereto by means of the snap catches formed by the sockets 9 andthe snap-heads 8. It will be readily seen that the shield forms a perfect cover for the radiatonand will prevent excessive cooling of the water/ in the same.v It will be further seen that when not in use, the devicecan be rolled up in a very small space, which adds to its rone embodinientlof my invention, I donot wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterationsv and modifications which may come .within the scope of the appended claims.
