PLACKET-CLOSUREQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,375, dated September 8, 1903.

Be it known that I, HARRY A. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, county of New York, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Placket-Olosures, of which the following is a. specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the rear part'of a skirt, showing the placket members separated and the devices applied, parts being broken away to more clearly disclose its structure; Fig. 2, a view of the under side of one member of the device detached; Fig.3, a transverse sectional view thereof; Fig. 4, a transverse sectional view showing a tubular covering for the wire stiffening-sections; Fig. 5, a longitudinal sectional view on line 5 5 of Fig. 4; and Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are face views of closure-strips, showing different forms of wire stiffening-sections.

The object of this invention is to provide a placket-closure strip made up of independent stiffening-sections with fastening devices located between the stiflfening-sections and independent of the sections,whereby the said strip willbe exceedingly resilient and'flexible.

A further object of the invention is to so construct the closure-strip that it may be readily and cheaply manufactured.

There are other and equally important objects and advantages of this invention, which will appear hereinafter.

Referring to the various parts by numerals, l designates the under member or edge of the placket, 2 the outer or overlapping member thereof, and 3 the waistband of the skirt. Secured to the outer surface of the inner member of the placket and to the inner surface of the outer member-thereof is a closurestrip 4. This closure-strip is made up of a series of stiffening-sections 5, which are secured to the cloth of the skirt or to an independent piece of fabric 6, such as a tape, said sections being separated from each other longitudinally a short distance, so as to leave a free flexible portion or section of fabric between them. Secured to this fabric between the adjacent ends of the stiffening-sections are the fastening devices 7. These fastening devices may be of any suitable design or structure, but preferably are the ordinary ball-and-socket snap-fasteners now in common use. Of course it will be understood that one member of these fastening devices is secured to one of the closure-strips 4C, and the corresponding and coactin g member is secured to the other strip 4 in the proper position.

The stiffening-sections may be of any suitable material and of any desired form. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2,they are formed of a single strand of flexible and resilient wire extended back and forth to form a fiat strip of suitable width, the wire at each bend along thelongitudinal edges of the sections being coiled into eyes to give the strip strength and resilience. In Figs. 6, 7, and 8 other forms of stiffeningsections 5 are shown.

The stiffenin -sections may be secured to the under side of a strip of fabric, such as tape, and the fasteners located between adjacent ends of said sections, said fasteners projecting through the tape to the forward side thereof. In Fig. 4 the stifiening-sections are shown as arranged within a tubular covering 8. This tubular covering may be of fabric or other suitable material and is of a proper width to permit the stifiening-sections to fit snugly therein, as shown. Then this form of covering is used, the fasteners are secured to both sides of the fabric and completely close it between the stifiening members and prevent any longitudinal movement of the members within the tube, as shown in Fig. 5. One advantage of this construction is that it will be unnecessary to fasten the stifiening-sections to thefabric coving, the stiffening-sections being simply slid into the tube to the proper position and then the fasteners put in place to permanently hold the said stiffening-sections therein. It will thus be seen that an exceedingly flexible closure-strip is provided, which when the two strips are connected together by the fastening means will effectually prevent any separation of the placket members between the fastening devices, while at the same time permitting the skirt to be drawn toward either side or buckled or puckered in any manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

3. A placket-closure strip formed of a fabric strip, a series of flexible and resilient stiffening-sections, formed of wire, said sections being separated from each other longitudinally, and a series of fastening devices, connected to said fabric strip between the stiffening-sections.

4. A placket-closure strip, formed of a Hat flexible tubular support, a series of stilfeningsections arranged therein and separated from each other at their ends, and fastening devices connected to said support between the stilfening-sections.

5. A placket-closure comprising a pair of members each member consisting of a flat flexible tubular support, a series of resilient stiffening-sections arranged longitudinally therein and separated from each other at their ends, one part of each of a series of two-part fastening devices secured to each of said members at intervals, whereby when the two parts of the fastening devices are connected together the two members of the closure-strip will be secured one upon the other and will be held against independent movement.

6. A placket-closure comprising two members each member being formed of a flexible tubular support, a series of stiffening-sections arranged longitudinally therein and formed of a resilient wire extended back and forth to form a strip of suitable Width to fit within the tubular support, one part of each of a series of two-part fastening devices being secured to each of said members and preventing any longitudinal movement of the stiffening-sections.

7. A placket-closure comprising two members each member being formed of a flexible tubular support, a series of stiffening-sections arranged longitudinally therein and formed of a resilient wire extended back and forth to form a strip of suitable width to fit within the tubular support, one part of each of a series of two-part fastening devices being secured to each of said members between the stilfening-sections and preventing any longitudinal movement of the said sections.

8. A placket-closure comprising two members each of which is formed of a flexible support, a series of stifiening-sections formed of resilient wire extended back and forth to form a fiat strip of suitable width, said stiffeningsections being secured to said support, one part of each of a series of two-part fastening devices secured to each of said members at intervals, whereby when the two parts of the fastening devices are connected together the two members of the closure device will be secured one upon the other and will be held against independent movement.

9. A placket-closure comprising a pair of members, each member consisting of a flexible tubular support, a series of resilient stiffening-sections arranged longitudinally therein and separated from each other at their ends, whereby flexible joints are formed between the sections, means for temporarily connecting the members at the flexiblejoints between the sections, whereby when the two members are temporarily connected together they will be secured one upon the other and held against independent movement.

10. A placket-closure device comprising, a pair of flexible members, aseries of independent stiffening-sections secured to each member, said sections being separated from each other longitudinally to form flexible joints between the sections, and a series of fastening devices connected to said flexible supports between the adjacent ends of the stiffeningsections. 7

11. A placket-closure consisting of a pair of members adapted to be superposed their full length when connected, each member consisting of a flexible support carrying a series of stiffening-sections arranged end to end and extending longitudinally of the member, a flexible connection being formed between each adjacent pair of stiffening-sections, the sections and joints of one member being so arranged that they lie opposite the sections and joints of the other member when the members are superposed, and devices for temporarily securing the members. one upon the other.
