Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 19.15.
I Application filed October 11, 1913. Serial No. 794,706.
To all whom, it hwy/concern Be it known that l, CARL H. PETERSON, a citizen of Sweden, county of Denver have invented "certain new and useful Improvements in Garter-Supporters, of which had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to garter supporters and more particularly to a device of this character which is designed for use asan attachment to mens under garments, the'invention having for its principal .objectsto produce a simple and etlicient garter supporter which will permit of freeand'unrestricted movement and will not retard the blood circulation.
My invention has for a still further object to provide a device of the above character which is of greatconvenience and serviceabili'ty in actual use and will not add materially to the cost of the garment.
\Vith the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure l is a view illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention as applied in actual use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the device; Fig. 3 is a sectional perspective taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail fragmental perspective view showing a slightly modified form of the invention; Fig. 5 is a similar view illustrating still another modification.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates a band of linen or other suitable fabric which is provided with the longitudinal folds 6. These folds are securely stitched together adjacent one of their longitudinal edges, as indicated at 7. The band is adapted to be applied to the lower edge of the drawers leg, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the latter being placed between the folds 6 of the band and securely stitched to said folds. By applying the device to the drawers leg in this manner, a very permanent, efficient and secure attachment 'is produced which serves as a protection or reinforcement for the edge of folds 6 Vbe band at the ends thereof, the
residing at Denver, in the a and State of Colorado,
reference beshort-sections of tape 8 are secured whereby the ends of theband may be drawn tightly together and the tapes tied to retain the band in place.
Atthe lower edge of the band, where the same isfolded upon itself, slits are out at spaced intervals, as indicated at 9, and through said-slits the ends of the tabs 10 are inserted. so that said tabslie between the folds 6 0f the band and are secured thereto by the rows of stitching 7. These tabs which areof double thickness are provided with openings 11 to receive a stud 12 upon the attaching plate 13 of the garter straps 14. Each of the attachmgdevicesfor these garter straps which are provided at their upper and lower ends, includes a loop member 15 for engagement over the head of the stud 12. The attaching devices uponthe lower cndsof said straps are adapted to be-con: nected-to the upper edge of the stocking in the usual manner and thereby provide a support for the stocking upon opposite sides of the leg.
By providing the band 5 with-the folds 6 and securing the tabslO between said folds in the manner above explained, it will be obvious that said folds will protect the wearers leg against irritation or chafing by the rubbing contact of the tab therewith which would be occasioned in the shifting movement of the hem or band. The band being secured about the wearers leg by means of the'tie strings 8, the tendency of the same to shift is greatly minimized as the arrangement'of the tabs dispenses with all projectionsupon the face of the band 5 with which the trousers might engage.
My improved garter support is particularly designed for use in connection with union under garments, the band 5, above described, taking the place of the hem on the lower edge of each leg. It will be obvious that the device may as well be used upon under garments of other construction. It will be understood that I do not desire to be limited in this regard in putting the invention into practice.
In Fig. 4, of the drawings, I have illustrated a slightly modified means for connecting the garter straps to the band 5 wherein the tab 10 has one of its ends inserted into the drawers leg. To one of the f' the slit 9in the lower edge of the band, the
free end being provided with a detachable 7 fastener indicated at l6, so that-said free end may be extended through a loop 17 on the garter strap and the members of the fastener connected to detachably hold the'strap in connection with the said tab. v
In Fig. 5, I have shown still another m0dification wherein the tab the exterior of the band at its lower ed e and stitched thereto. This tab is providedwith an opening 11 in which a metal reinforcing platel? nection of the garter strap to this form'of the'd'e vice is the sameas that'described in connection with the preferred form.
From the foregoing it isbelieved that the construction and manner o'f'use of the sev eral forms"ofmyinvention will'be clearly and fully understood. Mydevice provides an efficient support for the stockin without occasioning the wearer any discom ort or re-' free circulationof the blood.
stricting the The application of my invention to themder garment does not add materially to the and as there are no metal parts the invention, the garment may be washed without removi'n the band therefrom. The invention as a w ole is extremely simple in its construction and highly servlceable and convenient in actual use. While I have shown and described the preferred form and construction of the several parts, it is'to be understood that the device is susceptible of still further modifica tion, and I reserve the right to resort to all such legitimate changes as mayfairly fall 10 is disposed upon is arranged. The mannerof conwithin the spirit and scope of the invention,
as claimed.
WVhatIclaim is:- r 1. In a device ofthe-character described,
a leg encircling band having longitu folds extending the entire length th and stitched together adjacent leg and tobe securely stitched thereto, said band at the linearfoldingpthereofheing provided at spaced points with" slits, tabs band toone of the folds thereofzg 3 v I 2: In a device of the charactr described,
a leg encircling band having longitudinal folds stitched together adjacent to "the line of folding, said folds beyond the stitching being adapted to be arranged upon opposite sides, of the-lower edge of a drawers'leg and t0. her-securely of the'band and depending below the lower edge of said band, and tie strings securedto opposite endsof said band.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature inthe presence of two witnesses.
