Specification of Letters Batcnt.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Sstluun Soonnnocu, a
citizen of the United States, residing at W'ebster, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Soldiers" Armor, of which the following .18 a spec1- fication.
This invention relates to an armor which may be worn on the person of a'soldier to protect him from injury by fire-arms, cutting implements, etc, and which, when not arranged upon the person of the soldier may be employed as a shield for protecting the soldier in a lineposition.
An object of the invention is to produce an armor which, while comprising a bulletproof construction, will readily yield to conform itself to the portion of the body to which the same is attached or which-may likewise be shaped to provide a shield of a desired configuration.
In carrying out my invention, it is my. purpose to produce an armor comprising an It is a further object of the invention to produce an armor which shall he of a comparatively simple construction, cheap to manufacture, readily applied, and which is thoroughly efiicient for the purpose devised. Other objects and advantages ,will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,
F1gure 1 is a view illustrating the application of the improvement as a bodyarmor.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the arrangement of the same when employed as a shield.
F'g. 3 is a rear view of the improvement.
Fig. 4 is a smional view approximately on the line 4.4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of -the improve- .outer series of non-yieldable plates, the,
ment on an enlarged scale. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the plates. b
Fig. 7 is a detail perspectivevlew' of the I part of the fibrous resilient filler employed tached to "t is person of the wearer.

proved armor comprises an inner series ofplates 5 and an outer series of plates 6. These plates are of some suitable hard mat'c-rial, such as Harveyizedsteel and are of a strength to withstand any shock or jar to which they are subjected. The lower series of plates are square or rectangular, and the outer members of the upper series have their outer edges arranged at an inclination so that the aid plates will thus conform themselves to the chest portion of the soldier, but, at the same time, the armor may be arranged upon other parts of the person of the soldier. The plates 5 and 6,
at the confronting edges'thereof, are conbeing constructed of strands of metal em- T bodies a natural-resiliency, and not only serves as a buffer member for the opposite series of plates, but has a spring element be-' tween the dplates to retain the, lates prop-- erly space awayfrom each of; er. In ad 'clition to'this, the filler, is designed to absorb the Shock and jar to which the shieldmay be subjected.
Upon the corner plates and adjacent the y I outer edges thereof, are secured eye members 9, the said eyes being designed to receive straps 11, whereby the same maybe-Fat- 1e armor, when not in use, and as *reviously stated, is designed to serve as a s ield, and from the foregoing description, whenv taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity and advantages of the construction will, it is thought, be appar-- ent without further detailed description.
The armor is flexible when used upon the body of'a wearer and is made so by partially detaching some or all ofthe hinge members on the inner plates and some of the hinge members on the outer plates.
'- Having thus described the invention, what Ielaimis:
1. .An armor comprising anions; and an plates of each of the series being arranged edge to edge, yieldable elements detachablyouter series of non-yieldable plates arranged edge to edge, yieldable connecting means for the plates at the confronting edges thereof, a filler of fibrous resilient material between the plates, detachable members securing the yieldable elements of the plates passing through the said fibrous resilient material, said members adapted to be partially detached whereby the plates may have relative movement, and eyes on the corner plates of the outer facing of the armor.
In testimony whereof I afiix-my signature.
SAEEUEL SUDERLOCK.
