E. R. TALLEY.
LIFE PROTECTING BODY'GUARD.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 6, I9I8.
Patented Jan. T, 1919.
EDWIN E. TALLEY, or GRINNELL, Iowa.
LIFE-PROTECTING BODY-GUARD.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led February 6, 1918. Serial No. 215,647.
To all 'whom it. may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. TALLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grinnell, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Protecting Body-Guards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'4 of the invention, such as will enable othe'rs skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and ii res of reference marked thereon, which orm a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in life protecting bodyguards for soldiers, and lconslsts in the provlsion of a simple and efficient device of this nature, and comprises essentially a jacket made up i of two layers of impenetrable, water and fire proof material, having an outer covering of overlapping metallic protecting disks.
The invention consists further in the provision of two layersfof impenetrable material forming a jacket to be worn by a soldier and adapted to be immune from'bullets and projectiles, the two layers being held yieldingly relative to each other, while theouter layer of the jacket is provided with a series of metallic disks pivoted together and overlapping one another.
The invention consists of other details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully descr1bed,shown in the accompanying drawings and then specically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing' a jacket made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view showing portions of the two layers of water proof impenetrable material held 1n yielding relation to each other.
Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view through the jacket, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of the metallic disks which are pivoted to one another.
forni to the shape of are slightly to the details of Patenteaaan. 7, 1919.
The j ers ofmaterial, which are adapted to conthe body of a wearer, have springs' of different lengths, those near the center being preferably longer` than those near the edge'thus diiferent distances.
Disks E, preferablyof metal, and which concaved'to conform to the convexed surface of the gether by means being arranged in rows and overlapping one another and adapted to cover the' entire front surface of the jacket.
By the provision of a jacket made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that the vital parts of a person from the neck to the hips may be protected, ythe layers of material being waterkand fire proof and of such a nature as to withstand the penetration of projectiles, while means is provided permitting the outer layer to give slightly under the impact of a blowv from a bullet or projectile against the outer covering of metallic scales or disks. j
Suitable straps orother fastening means are provided whereby the device may be attached securely to the body of the. wearer.
What I. claim to be new is:
41. A life protecting body guard made of two layers of water and fire proof impenetrable material held in yielding relation with each other,
two layers of water and fire proof impenespacing the layers apart jacket are. pivoted to-` of rivets F, several disks and a covering of metallicdisks upon the surface of the outer layer. 2. A life protecting body guard made of trable material spaced apart, coiled springs mounted between the two layers permitting the latter to have yielding movements, and a.
series .of metallic disks face of the outer layer.
. 3. A life 4protecting body guard made of two layers of water and fire proof impeneprotecting the sur- 10 upon said rivets and interposed between the two layers, a series of concaved disks pivoted and overlapping one another and forming a covering to the surface of the outer of said layers.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my 15 signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWIN R. TALLEY. Witnesses:
G. H. WALKER, J M. WooDWoR'rH.
