CHARLES JOHNSON, 0F DENT, MINNESOTA.
` -Dnracnannn rEN'cnQros'r 150mm;
Specification ot VLetters Patent. i
Patented sept. 1o, 1am.
Application led January 30, 1912; Serial No. 674,278.
To all 'whom #may concemf Be it known .that I, CHARLES', JOHNSON, 'a citizen of the United States, residing at Dent, in t-he county of Ottertail and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Fence-Post Points; and I do hereby declare to be a full,clear,and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled inthe art to which it appe'rtains to make and-use the'same.
This invention relates to detachable point-s and more particularly to fence post points Y t An object of the invention is 'to provide a detachable lpoint for securing fence posts imposition. y o Another object is to devise a point which position or for vsecuring broken posts and fastening the upper portion of said broken posts upon their Vlower portions within the Another` object is to provide a 4point of the 'above stated character --whih will bev rin the performanceo its duties. t
' Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointedy out in the' lspecification and claims;
In theaccompanyingdrawings which are made a part of thisv application, Figure 1- is an .elevational view showing the point [la new post, 4such Yas formed of cordwood,'1n osition, while, Fig.
upperportion of a. broken; post' upon Iits lower portionl withinthe ground, and, Fig. 3 isa cross sectional viewon the line 3-3 of'Fi.1. f
Re errin more particularlyto the draw-- ich ysimilar reference numerals designate corresponding parts' throughout the several views, 1 represents af ost such as formed of ,cordw'ood and -empoyed asa fence 0st', said post having the front angle 2 ofj t efmetallic detachable point secured` thereto by the spikes-Spr otherfsuitableg means. The horizontall portion-4 of.l the front angle of. said point is secured to the bott-om of the'iost 1 by means of a'spike 3 andthe depen mg vertical portion of the `thus making the task,
vmay be' readily employed for holding solid posts in position or for securing the upper A wood in the c'onstruction pensive lfences, -ln ppsitlon to frontangle of said point. is adapted to be driven into the ground beneath the post 1. n It will be understood that as the metallic point is formed of angle iron, the side angle l portions 6, 7 and 8 are at rightangles to lthe portions 2, 4 and 5 of the front angle of said point. The lower extremities of the portions-5 and 8 are tapered to a point 9, of driving the de l8 of. the front and pending portions 5 and n :side/angles respectively of said' point into the ',giound, easy. The upper portion 6 of the side angle of the point is provided with suitable bolt openings 10 through which4 spikes 11 maybe driven, said spikes entering the upper port-ion 12 of a broken post to secure said upper portion upon its lower ,7o portion 13 within the ground, theodepend` v ing portions 5 and 8 of the front. and side 1 angles respectively' of said' point being driven into the ground along the side of the' lower portion 13 of the wooden post.A The horizontal portions 4 and 7 of the metallic front rest, 1n this instance, upon the surface of the ground or they may, if desired, be driven lslightly below the surface of the ground to properly seat theupper portion 12 of the wooden post upon its lower portion 13. v- Y u Thus it will be seen that I have provided a poi-nt for fence posts and the like which portipns of broken posts upon their lower portions 'within the ground. When the point isused .for the latter" purpose, the broken post is made as strong as a new ost. It will'also be apparenti-hat this sty e of point may beused in connection Withfcordf of cheap or inex- ,securely holding each post This where and `inclos'e large tracts receive the fence wire. 'is especially desirable in communities fences are -numerous of ound. l winv to the construotion'of the metallic pointst ey may be-manufactured atan; exv tremely small cost and willbe hi hly effec-f tive in theperformance oftheir utles. N Whatl ciaim is: i A supporting member forfenceposts com-v prising, a strip lbent toform parallelf end 105 sections and a' right angularly disposed ,central portion, an integral flange projectname to this specification in the presence of ing from said strip for the entire length of two subscribing Witnesses. one of the longitudinal edges thereof, and.
disposed at right angles thereto, one end of CHARLES JOHNSON' 5 said member being provided with spaced Witnesses: t
openings and the other end being tapered. WILLIAM L. PARSONS,
In testimony whereof I have signed my M. M. PARSONS.
Copies of'this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Colnmissioner of latents, Washington, D. C.
