The object of my invention is to provide 2a a simple, compact, easily operated, strong and durable coupler which is adapted to be connected to the car body by a plurality of draft stems and which may be provided with a vertically sliding gravity lock, a knuckle opener actuated by such lock and a supplemental lock, or so-called lock-to-the-lock, for preventing the accidental unlocking of the coupler when the car to which it is attached is in service.

By the construction and combination of the parts hereinafter described a coupler head of comparatively small dimensions serves to furnish a support and to cooperate with a knuckle, lock, knuckle-opener mechanism and lock-tothe-lock devices, the construction, therefore, being particularly well fitted for the type of couplers heretofore mentioned in which the coupler head is yieldingly connected to the car body by means of a plurality of draft stems.
