GUSTAF A. HERMANSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE NATIONAL MALLEABLE CASTINGS COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A
CORPORATION OF OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUS'IAF A. HERMAN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in car couplers.
The object of my invention is to provide a car coupler of the Master Car Builders type of a simple, strong, eflicient and durable construction, in which the lifting of the lock to the required extent will antomatically throw the knuckle open and in which the iifting of the lock will also operate to cause it to engage the rear arm or tail of the knuckle, and thus set the lock in position for uncoupling when the cars subsequently separate.
My invention consists in the means I employ to practically accomplish this object or result. That is to say, it consists in connection with the draw-head and pivoted knuckle, of a vertically movable rotatable lock having a laterally projecting arm ada ted to engage the rear arm or tail of the Knuckle to throw the knuckle open, the draw-head having a cam or incline for rotating the lock as it is raised, combined with means for more perfectly realizing the functions of the said parts.
It further consists in providing the laterally projecting arm of the rotatable lock with a lock-set ledge or shoulder adapted to be held above the knuckle-tail before the knuckle swings open, to engage the rear 'arm or tail of the knuckle and thus set the lock in position for uncoupling, the cam or incline on the draw-head also serving to turn the lock into position to cause the lockset on the lock to positively engage the rear arm or tail of the knuckle.
It further consists in connection with these parts, of a knuckle having a rear arm or tail provided with a slotted opening for the depending finger or portion of the laterally projecting arm on the lock to fit in or pass through.
It further consists in the novel construc tion of parts and devices and in the novel. combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a cen- 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

tral vertical longitudinal section of a car coupler embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section on line l4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 1s a detail horizontal section of the drawhead on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, the knuckle and lock being remove Fig. 6 is a detail section of a portion of the draw-head on line 66 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail elevation of the lock.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the draw-head having the customary pivot arm a and guard arm a B is the knuckle having the customary front arm or nose I) and rear arm or tail 5, C is the pivot pin, D the vertically movable and partially rotatable lock and F the operating lever connected by a link or links f with the lock.
The draw-head A has a round or cylindrical opening A at its upper part for the lock to vertically slide and rotate in. The draw-head A is further provided with a cam or incline A preferably of spiroconi' cal form for turning or rotating the lock on its axis as it is raised by engagement with the laterally projecting arm d of the lock. The draw-head A also has an opening A in its bottom web A for the lower end of the lock to pass through when the same is in its lowermost position.
The rear arm or tail 5 of the knuckle is preferably furnished with a slot or opening 6 for the depending finger or portion (Z of the laterally projecting arm d of the lock to pass through. The rear arm I) of the knuckle is also provided with a rounded or curved upper corner surface 6 adjacent and back of the lock-set portion 6 thereof to facilitate the dropping of the lock to place, and the draw-head is also preferably provided with an incline or cam-like projection a at the bottom web thereof which is adapted to engage the extreme lower end 65 of the depending portion (Z of the lock arm cl to turn the lock into proper position as it descends to its lowermost position.
The laterally projecting knuckle throwing arm d of the lock D is provided with a lock-- set ledge or shoulder (Z adapted to engage, when the lock is partially raised, the rear arm or tail 5 of the knuckle B at b to set or support the lock in position on the tail of the closed knuckle so that the knuckle may subsequently swing open when the cars separate.
with a rounded or curved surface d for engagement with the knuckle throwing cam or.
incline A on the draw-head. The cam or incline on the draw-head operates by its engagement with the arm cl of the lock to turn the lock on its axis and thus cause the lock to throw the knuckle open. This cam or in'cline on the draw-head also positively turns the lock sufficiently, 'beforeit is raised high enough to begin to throw the knuckle open, to cause the lock-set shoulder on the arm to overhang the rear arm or tail of the closed knuckle and thus positively insure the proper engagement of the lock-set on the lock with the knuckle.
The cylindrical rounded or trunnion acting portion of the lock in cooperation with the cylindrical lock opening in the drawhead insures the proper rotating movement of the lock to accomplish the lock-set function and also to accomplish the knuckle throwing function when the lock is further raised. The lock opening A in the drawhead may have an integral flange a on the draw-head partially closing the'same. The lock may be conveniently removed through the knuckle opening of the draw-head, the knuckle being first removed.
By use of the term rotatable or axially ro- The lateral or horizontally project ing arm cl of the lock is preferably furnishedtatable as applied to the lock D, I do not wish to be understood as implying that the lock makes a complete turn or rotation on its axis, but only that it turns or rot-ates through such arc as may be necessary to accomplish its several functions.
I claim In a car coupler, the combination with a draw head having an opening in its upper part, said opening being formed with a bearing at its upper end and a cam face below said bearing located at the rear of the head, of a lock member comprising a pin having an enlarged head axially rotatable and vertically slidable in said bearing and confined therein, said pin being provided with an integral, laterally extending arm having a depending 'fin ger carried at its free end, said arm being curved intermediate the pin and the finger and adapted to cooperate with said cam face, whereby the latter swings the lock about its axis when moved vertically, and a knuckle having a surface with which said shoulder engages and formed with a slot between the Walls or" which said depending finger is confined, substantially as specified.
