CAR-COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '7, 1909.
Application filed February 8, 1908. Serial No. 414,903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON A. TOWER, of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure .1 shows my improved coupler in horizontal section, the knuckle being in plan view and open; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 11-11 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3is a vertical cross section on the line III-III of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the parts in closed position; Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal-section on the line VV of Fig. 4c, and Fig. 6 isa vertical cross section on the line VIVI of Fig. 5.
In the drawings, 2 represents the drawhead, and 3 the knuckle, the latter being provided with a vertical axis l. The lock 5 is vertically movable and has a rearwardly extending arm 6 which is pivoted at 7 within the shank of the draw-bar. The lock is moved vertically by a lifting arm or member 8, which projects upward through the shank of the draw-bar and engages the arm 6 of the lock. The arm 8 projects from a lever 8 which is pivoted on the axis 7 and is preferably operated by a lifting yoke 9 mounted on a rock shaft 10 which is pivoted in a bracket 11 extending downwardly from the carrying-iron 12 of the coupler. By
rocking the shaft 10 the lever 8 is lifted, the arm 8 caused to engage and to lift the arm 6 and thus to raise the lock. The engagement of the lever 8 with the arm 6 is back of the coupler head. Its precise form is not essential with respect to my invention, when broadly considered.
I prefer to form the lniuckle-opening device on an arm 8 which extends upwardly from the lever 8 and is formed at its upper end with a cam surface 8 adapted to en'- gage an incline at the rear side of the knuckle tail, so that after the lock 5 is raised, this cam surface will engage the incline on the knuckle and will move it open.
Within the scope of my invention as defined in the claim the parts may be modified in various ways, since hat I claim is A coupler having a lock with a rearward extension pivoted to the shank of the drawhead, and a lifting memberextending upwardly through the shank and adapted to lift the lock, said lifting member being pivoted on the axis of the look,
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand. CLINTON A. TOIVER.
