A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- DAVID LEONARD BARNES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE CON- SOLIDATED COUPLING COMPANY, OF NEWV JERSEY.
CAR-COUPUNG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,808, dated July 30, 1889.
Application iiled September 7, 1888. Seiial No. 284,846. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: similar shoulders F upon the knuckle D, both Be it known that I, DAVID LEONARD of which shoulders are concentric with the BARNES, a citizen of the United States, and point of rotation C of the drawnhead. In Fig. aresidcnt of Chicago, in the county of Cook, 2, however, the bearing-shoulders E are not 5 State of Illinois, have invented certain new shown, and in place thereof, in order to pro- 55 and useful Improvements in Car-Couplers, vide means for resisting the traction strains of which the following is a specification. to which the knuckle is subjected, is the boss My invention has special reference to the or projection R, extending inwardly from the construction of vertical-plane couplers of the wall B2 and taking into the cavity D proio type generally known as the Dowling coupvided to receive it in the stem of the 6o ler. knuckle D.
My invention relates to various details of The knuckle D corresponds in all respects construction, which will be hereinafter spewith the knuckles heretofore used in coupcically mentioned, whereby the coupling is lers of this class-that is to say, it has ahook- 15 made stronger and better able to meet the head and stem which works in an arc-shaped 65 conditions required in practice. slot-the only difference being that the end of My improvements may be divided into two the knuckle is carried outward and backparts, the first relating to the configuration Wardly as the projection D2, which projects of the draw-head and coupling-hook and the from the arc-shaped portion of the knuckle 2o second to the locking device for the couplingand lies wholly without the arc of rotation of 7o hook. the arc-shaped portion. At one side of the drawis shown in Figs. 3 and 8, and consists of the head is an arc-shaped slot B, located between cylindrical pin divided into three portions G the walls B B2. Near the outer end of the G G2. The part Gcorresponds in Width with 45 wall B2 is the cylindrical projection C, which the tongue or projection D2 on the stem of 95 forms the center of rotation for the knuckle the knuckle. The part G is supported above D. The top and bottom plates of the drawthe stem of the knuckle by the pin S, which head are likewise provided with bearingmoves in a slot O. j A similar pin S moves in shoulders E, projecting into the arc-shaped a similar slot O and supports the part G2.
5o slot, which shoulders are concentric with V represents a lever pivoted at T, the end 10o of which U bears on the under part of the pin G2. By depressing the lever V until the point U strikes against the projection Kin the bottom plate of the draw-head, and as shown in the dotted lines, the sectional pin is elevated until the edges of the pin G register with those of the projection D2, when the knuckle can be opened. The limit of movement of the The tongue D2 has less vertical depth than. the balance of the stem, and hence as the knuckle moves outwardly the part of the pin G moves downwardly into the position which it ordinarily occupies when the hook is locked. As the tongue moves inward it strikes this pin, which is inclined, as shown at G3, and which is moved upward by the inner movement of the tongue D2.
I have not considered it necessary in this speciiication to enter into a detailed description of all the various features of the coupler, for the reason that the same have been fully described in Letters Patent heretofore granted to Dowling and others.
I claim as my inventionl. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-head having an arc-shaped slot formed therein, of a movable knuckle provided with an arc-shaped stem and a tongue or projection extending from said stem, through which is made an opening for receiving a locking device, substantially as described.
2. In a car-coupler, and in combination with a draw-head having an arc-shaped slot formed therein, an inclined slot concentric with such arc-shaped slot, a movable knuckle provided with an arc-shaped stem, a projection or tongue on the end of said stem, and a locking device one port-ion of which is adapted to engage with said inclined slot in the draw-head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-head and the movable knuckle thereof, of a sectional coupling-pin,substantially as described.
4. In a carco1'1pler,the combination, with a draw-head and the movable knuckle thereof, of a vertically-acting sectional coupling-pin and the means for limiting the motion of the pin, consisting of the pins S and S and slots O and O, substantially as described.
5. In a car-coupler, the combination, with a draw-head and knuckle thereof, and with the sectional coupling-pin substantially of the character indicated, of the leveradapted to give motion to said pin, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
DAVID LEONARD BARNES.
