SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 781,791, dated February 7, 1905.

Be it known that we, FRANK S. Snmrnna and {aunties l. TURNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Newcastle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Uar-(buplers; and we do declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in theart to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in car-couplers.
he object ofithe invention is to provide an automaticall,voperating car-coupler the operative parts of which are on the outside, thereby obviating the necessity of providing a recessed orchamlalred draw-bar or ccmplerhead to receive said parts and permitting the use of a strong, durable, and solid construction of draw and head.
A further object is to provide a coupler so constructed and arranged that the knuckle pivot-pin will be relieved of the entire stress or pull, said stress being distributed between said pivot-pin and the lock-pin of the coupler.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particulary pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a coupler and draw-bar embodying the. invention, showing in full lines the position of the knuckle when coupled and in dotted lines the position of the same when uncoupled and ready to be engaged by the coupler of the next car. Said pin is provided with an offset head 13, whereby the same is prevented from slipping through said aperture 10. The corner of said locking-pin adjacent to the upper tailpiece 6 of the knuckle is beveled or cut away, as shown at 14, so that when said pin is elevated in the aperture 10 said tailpiece is permitted to be moved past said pin, when the knuckle & is brought to a coupled or un coupled position. \Vhen said knuckle is in an uncoupled position, the offset head of the pin 12 is adapted to rest upon the hook-shaped end of the upper tailpiece 6, which supports said pin in an elevated position until said knuckle is moved to a coupled position, at which time the tailpiece (5 will be swung from beneath the offset head of said pin, thereby permitting the latter to drop into position upon said draw-bar, thus automatically locking the knuckle in its coupled position.
