. ELASTIC-FLUID TURBINE.
Patented Aug. 13,1912.- Serial No. 804,088.
To all whom-it may concern: Be it known that I, Wmroan W. DAKE, a citizen of the United Stat cs, residing at. Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Elastic-Fluid Tub. bine-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to elastic fluid turbine en ines, and its object is to pzovide improve passage-containing memrs or passage blocks through-wh1ch the fluid is delivered or redelivered to the i'rotor buckets. This object is attained by,
and my present invention is embodied in, the mechanism hereinafter described, illustrated by theaccompanying drawings, in which:-'
Figure 1 is a section of my passage-block and of a part of therrotor, taken on line S- S of Fig. 2, being on a plane at right angles to the 'rotors axis: Fig. 2 is a section of said passage-block taken on a line corresponding with the arc line X-X of Fig. '1: and Fig. 3 shows the same parts seen'in Fig. 2, in the same relative position, and viewed from the same direction, but
separated from each other, and no part being sectioned,
My passage block is detachably fastened as by screws 1 to the supporting frame, as the rotor casing (shown broken away in Fig. 2) of the turbine engine. The body portion 2 of the passage block has preferably a low lug 3 adapted to be surfaced to provide a close contact with such casing. A second lug 4 on the opposite side of the body 2 is likewise adapted to be surfacedto provide a close joint with the nozzle passage block 5, a thin metal tightening and wearing piece or washer 6 being interposed. The elastic/ fluid, hereinafter called steam, is admitted from suitable supply pipes (not shown), by Y the opening 7 through the body 2, its lugs 3 and 4 and the washer 6, into the passa e 8 formed in the inner faceof the nozz e passage b10ck'5, such passage continuing to form the nozzle 9, whence the steam is delivered to the buckets of the rotor 10, a segment of which only is shown in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that the washer 6 may, when worn, be easily removed and replaced. The steam being delivered from the nozzle 9 to rotor buckets 11 and 12 and exerting sa 1A this, its first driving impulse on the rotor, emerges from such buckets into passages 13 and 14- of the outer or primary passage block, when it is, by the walls of such passages, redelivered to buckets at that time opposite the discharge vents of such pases, as the buckets 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19. ter exerting this, its second driving im pulseon the rotor, the steam passes from such buckets into the passages 20 and 21 of the inner or secondary passage block, when it is, by the walls of such passages, again redelivered t0v buckets at that time opposite the vents of such passages, as the buckets 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 and, after exerting this, its third driving impulse on the rotor, escapes.
The various passages in the outer and inner passage blocks are formed with their two opposite side walls converging toward their discharge vents, as seen in Fig. 2 illustrating the construction of the inner passage block, the construction of the outer passage block as to such converging side walls being similar.
The outer and inner passage blocks are formed in separate members or halves, half or a part of the passages being formed in the inner face of each member, so that such half passages register when such members are assembled, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, the construction of the outer passage block being similar to that of the inner block in this respect also. The two members of the inner block are indicated by the numerals 30 and 31, respectively, one of the members of the outer block being indicated by the numeral 32. The half blocks may be readily separated for cleaning the passages, and are held together and supported by screws 28 for the inner block, and 29 for the outer block. It will be seen that by forming the passages in the face of these various blocks, economy and easy manufacture are attained.
My invention may be embodied in varying mechanisms, and I do not propose to confine myself to the construction shown and described.
I claim:
1. In a machine of the character described, a frame, a rotor, primary and secondary passage blocks, a nozzle passage block, all said blocks having passages dei 'livering the driving fluidtdthe rotor, and
a supporting member carrying said blocks and removably secured to the frame.
2. In a machine of the character described, a passage block comprising detachably connected members, one of which has formed in its plane face adjacent'the other 'member .a passage through which the drip ing fluid is delivered to the rotor.
3. In a machine of the character de- M scribed, a passage" block comprising detachably connected members and a wearing I plate held between them, one of said members scribed, a frame, a rotor, a nozzle block, a
having formed in its face adjacent the other member a passage through which the driving fluid is delivered to the rotor.
4:. In a machine of the character depassage block through which the driving fluid is received from and redelivered to the rotor, a supporting member for the blocks passage through which the driving fluid is delivered to the rotor, said passage in each registering with the passage in the other member.
6. In a machine of the character described, a passage block comprising detach- I oseassa ably connected memlieraeaeh having formed in its face adjacent the other member a passage through which the driving fluid is delivered to the rotor, said passage in each registering with the passage in the other member, and the depth .of each passage be- -"low the said surface of its block diminishing toward the discharge vent of such passage. v r
7 In a machine of the character described,'a passage block comprising detachably connected members, one of which has formed in its face adjacent the other member a passage through which thedriving fluid is delivered to the rotor, the depth of such passage below the said surface of, its block diminishing toward the discharge vent of the passage. I v
8. In a machine of the character, described, a frame, a passage blockcomprising detachably connected members, each; having formed in its face adjacent the,- other memher a passage through which the driving fluid is delivered to the rotor,,said passage in each registering with the passage-in the other member, and a supporting: member or e the passage block, the supporting member and other said members being detachably connected together and t0 the frame; H
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. V
