To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEONARD N. SALIS- BURY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Glarksburg, in the county of Harrison, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Cuspidor-I-Iolders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to cuspidor holders.

The object of the invention resides in the construction of a portable device of the character named through the instrumentality of which cuspi'dors may be rigidly held during the operation of cleaning without the necessity of grasping same in the hands.

lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the sevreal views; and in which,

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention with a cuspidor secured in the device; said euspidor being shown in dotted lines; Fig. 2, a plan view of the device with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and. Fig. 4;, an end view looking toward the right in Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings, the device is shown as comprising a base 10 which has socured to one end thereof an upright 11. Mounted on the inner face of said upright 11 is a pad 12 formed preferably of rubber and having its inner face dished so as to conform approximately to the contour of a cuspidor. Hinged on the base 10 intermediate its ends so as to be capable of movement toward and away from the upright 11 is a member 13 which has formed therethrough near its free end an aperture 14. Slidably mounted in this aperture 14 is an arm 15 which has mounted on its end adjacent the upright 11 a pad 16 which has its outer face dished so as to conform approximately to the contour of a cuspidor. Movement of the member 13 toward the upright 11 is normally limited by means of a leaf spring 17 which has one end secured to the base 10 as at 18, the free end of said spring engaging the member 13. In orderto hold the arm 15 against movement in the aperture 14 there is mounted in the member 13 a set screw 19 adapted to impinge upon said arm 15 in the usual and well known manner.

The operation of the device it is believed will be obvious; it only being necessary to place the cuspidor upon the base 10 between the upright 11 and the hinged member 13. hen in this position the member 13 is pushed by means of the foot toward the upright 11 thus securely holding the cuspidor against displacement from the base 10. The spring 17 serves to move the member 18 away from the upright 11 when the pressure of the foot thereon ceases. By the adjustment of the arm .15 through the instrumcntality of the set screw 19 the holder may be easily utilized with cfiicieucy with cuspidors of various sizes.

lVhat is claimed is:

A cuspidor holder comprising a base having an upright secured thereto, an arm hinged to said base and movable toward and away from the upright, said arm having an opening therein disposed at an angle to its longitudinal axis, a bar mounted for longitudinal adjustment in said opening, a cuspidor engaging head on the end of said bar adjacent the upright, said head being adapted to engage and force a cuspidor disposed upon the base against said upright when the arm is moved toward the upright whereby the cuspidor is held against displacement, a leaf spring mounted on the base for engagement with the arm to move the latter away from the upright, and means for locking said bar in a desired adjustment with respect to the arm.
