UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL C. MECKFESSEL ANI) ARTHUR J. WEIL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HAT-PIN GUARD AND POINT PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Yatent.
Application filed February 25, 1911.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Serial No. 610,717.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EMIL C. Mnoxrnssnr. and ARTHUR J. WEIL, citizens of the United States of America, and residents of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Guards and Point Protectors, of which the following is a specilication.
The object of the present invention is to provide a hat pin guard and point protector which will be cheap and simple in form, and which may be quickly applied to the point of the hat pin and quickly removed therefrom. The improved guard and protector also forms an additional ornament for the hat pin, giving the appearance of several pins being stuck into the hat. Such a guard and protector is clearly described in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts, and in which- Figure l is an isometric view of a hat pin with the improved guard and protector applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the guard and protector, showing in full lines the point of the hat pin. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line III-III, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a like View on the line IV-IV, Fig. 2.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a hat pin with an ornamental head 2.
3 represents the barrel of the guard and protector having a flared mouth 4 to receive the point of the hat pin 1.
5 is a head, which may be ornamental, if desired, applled to and closing the end of the barrel 3 opposite the mouth 4.
6 is a spring clip anchored to the barrel 3 near its head end by a sleeve 7 The normal tendency of the spring clip is outwardly. It is provided at its engaging end with an inwardly projecting tooth 8 which extends through a perforatlon 9 in the barrel 3 at the base of the mouth 4.
10 is a clip operating button or sleeve slidably mounted on barrel 3 and embracing the clip (S to depress it as sleeve or button 10 is slid longitudinally toward the mouth 4. Clip 6 is provided with an inclined outwardly extending portion 11 adjacent the tooth 8 to increase the play of the clip 6. For the same purpose and also to ermit of a perfectly round bore in the colar or button 10, a groove 12 is provided which extends longitudinally from a point near the perforation line of the sleeve 7. In adjusting the guard and protector to a hat pin, the user merely grasps the ornamental head 5 in the palm of the hand and retracts, if necessary, with her fingers the button or collar 10. This frees spring cli 6 which immediately clears the barrel 3 or the reception of a point of a pin as the mouth 4 of the barrel 3 is made markedly flaring. The user will have no diiiiculty in engaging the point of a hat pin with the barrel 3 of the guard or protector when the guard or protector is shoved onto the point of the hat pin to the full extent, the button or sleeve 10 is again projected, clamping the spring clip 6 or its tooth 8 firmly adainst the point of the hat pin 1 and thus hdlding the guard or protector to the hat pin.
We claim:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a barrel provided with an aperture, a resilient clip mounted on the outer wall of said barrel and having an outwardly inclined portion with an inturned extremity opposite said aperture, and means slidable along said barrel and over said clip to press the inclined portion inwardly with its extremity projecting through said aperture.
EMIL C. MECKFESSEL. ARTHUR J. WEIL.
