To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, THOMAS P. THERI- AULT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Sheridan, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pins, of which the following is a specification.

i This invention relates to hat pins and particularly to hat pins of the safety type, capable of afi'ording sufficient rigidity to permit its application to a hat and hair of a user, means being provided for permitting retractile and resilient action "of the penetrating portion of the securing device, thereby removing the penetrating portion from a position which might be injurious to others who are in proximity to the wearer.

An object of the present invention is to provide a hat securing device which is automatically operated, due to the manipulation resulting from the application of pressure in forcing the penetrating member through the hat and hair of the wearer, the said means being automatically retracted upon the removal of the pressure, aforesaid.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation; Fig. 2 illustrates a view similar to that shown in Fig. 1 with the parts in different positions of adjustment; Fig. 3 illustrates an enlarged sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 illustrates a sectional view on the line t4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 illustrates a sectional View on the line 55 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 6 illustrates a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2.

In these drawings 7 denotes a tubular member having a neck 8 formed as a part or continuation of the tubular member, said tubular member being of such resilient material as will permit the neck to assume the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The neck 8 terminates in a spur 9 adapted to penetrate the hat and hair and there is preferably a shoulder 10 at the junction of the neck and spur adapted as an abutment for the end of a plunger 11, which is movable in the tubular member and which rides on the curved neck 8 and straightens the same, as shown in Fig. 2, the end of the said plunger being pressed against the shoulder so that the spuris forced through the hat and hair after which the plunger is retracted, as shown in Fig. l and the neck is curved so as to throw the point of the spur inwardly toward the hat so that the said spur may not assume a position dangerous to those who approach the wearer. The end of the tubular member remote from the neck has a flange 12 and forms an anchorage for a spring 13 which spring encircles the plunger between the flange and the head 14: of said plunger, the said head being of the general type of heads of hat pins commonly employed and may have any ornamental configuration or embellishment. One end of the spring 13 abuts the head, as stated, and the action of the spring is to hold the plunger in the retracted position shown in Fig. 1, whereas when the hat pin is being applied to the hat, the head is pressed toward the flange 12 and the spring is contracted.

I claim A hat pin comprising a tubular member having a flange on one end thereof, and an integral spur adjacent the opposite end, said tubular member being cutaway adjacent the spur, to provide a resilient concaved neck, a shoulder at thejunotion of the neck and spur, a plunger operating in the tubular member, a head on one end of the plunger, the opposite end of the plunger being rounded to conform to the concaved surface of the neck, said plunger adapted to engage with the neck portion and shoulder for holding the neck portion in alinement with the walls of the tubular member, and resilient means between the head of the plunger and flange of the tubular member for holding the rounded edge of the plunger normally out of engagement with the shoulder.
