Be it known that I, GUs'ravUs A. Eon- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State ofvIllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle Holding and Protecting Devices, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to improvements in candle-holding and protecting devices, and has for one of its objects to provide a cheap, efficient, quickly and conveniently operating means for attaching a candle-holding device to a supporting structure, such as a twig of a Christmas tree or the like.

Another object of my invention is to provide a protecting means for the candle which also serves for decorating purposes, in the nature of a chimney.

Other and further objects of my invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art from a consideration of the following description taken in conjunction with the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with a part broken away, showing a central vertical section; Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4l is an enlarged broken away portion of the clamp.

In all of the views, the same reference characters indicate similar parts.

When small candles have been used heretofore for decorative purposes, such as for illuminating Christmas trees, it has been found to be a very diflicult matter to secure the candle holder properly and securely to the branches of the tree, and while the body of such candles is usually of various colors, thereby enhancing their decorative appearance during daylight, the flames are of uniform color and are exposed and are dangerous to surrounding inflammable material.

The object of my invention is to overcome these objections, in a simple structure, without increasing the expense of such devices to a prohibitive degree. To this end, a combined candle and chimney holder 5 is made of a thin sheet metal disk having an outside upturned rim 6, to serve as a chimney holder, and having aseries of tongues 7 punched from the bottom 8, and upturned around the center from slots 9 to provide a candle 5 holder and to provide openings for entrance ot air necessary for combustion when the candle is burning. Two shorter tongues 10 and 11 are punched and upturned to provide supports for the attaching means. These tongues are perforated as at 12 to provide one element of a hinge. A clamping member 13 is provided with two upturned arms 14-15 each having a tongue 16 provided in its end and outturned to form a ,hinge pin for coperat-ion with the perforations 12-12 in the hinge members 10 and 11. The tongues are then turned at right angles, as shown at 17, to prevent their disengagement. The other free end 18 of the part 13 is provided with teeth 19 on its edge and is preferably bent at right angles, as at 20, to

Vpermit the teeth to engage the edge of the bottom 8 which is provided by the slot 9 from which one of the vertical tongues 7 has been formed. Teeth or serrations 21 are provided on the part 13 by punching out pointed tongues from the part 13 or otherwise serrating or roughening the surface. Similar projections 22 are provided on the under surface of the base 8 and between these two roughened surfaces the branch of the tree upon which the device is supported is to be contained.

When placing the device in position, it is rested upon a limb so that the teeth engage the limb or twig. Then the hinged clamp piece 13 is raised until the part 18 enters the slot 9 when it is pressed upwardly into )firm engagement with the twig, the teeth 21 entering same or being brought into firm contact therewith. The teeth 19 will engage the part S, and by this latching means, the device will be retained in an upright position on the support. The teeth on the respective parts will prevent it from rotating.

The ease and convenience with which the device may be applied and its adaptability to twigs, or other similar supports, of varying sizes, is to be appreciated. As a valuable adjunct to the candle holding device, I provide a candle-protecting and light coloring means, in the nature of a chimney consisting of a cylinder of translucent heat resisting material 23, such for instance as mica, either colored in various and many tints, or surrounded by a thin sheet of colored translucent material 24, such as gelatin, or the like, through which the light from the candle will be transmitted for display and ornamentation. which the chimney is composed, may be held together by metallic terminal rings, 25 and 26.

The candle 27 is shown Wit-hin the chimney. The candle, and correspondingly the chimney, may be made shorter than shown, and the diameter of the candle may be increased if desired, whereby the life of the candle Will remain unchanged.

llVhat I claim is:

l. In a device of the character described, a candle holder comprising al disk, a clamping member at one end loosely secured thereto ,for free hinging movement, teeth on said member for engaging a support, and latch means upon the other end to retain said member in position to engage the support.

2. In a device of the cha lacter described, a candle holder comprising a disk, radial tongues punched therefrom and upturned to form a candle-receiving socket, and a clamping latch-member hinged at one end to the bottom of said disk, the other end thereof adapted to enter a perforation provided by one of said tongues, and having teeth to engage the edge thereof.

In a device of the character described, a candle holder comprising a disk, perforated tongues punched therefrom and outturned to form hinge members for a support-clamping member, and a clamping member having transversely projecting arms, each arm having tongues punched therefrom and outt-urned for engagement in said perforations to provide a hinge, and teeth on the free end vof Vsaid clamping member for engagement of an edge provided in said disk.

In a device of the character described, a candle holder comprising a disk flanged at its edge to retain a candle protecting cylinder, a hinged clamping member loosely attached to said disk, and a candle-protecting and light-coloring cylinder engaging said flange and consisting of a translucent colored heat-resisting material adapted to inclose the candle.

A device of the'character described comprising a clamping member for engaging a twig, a candle-protecting cylinder of suitably colored, heat-resisting, material, and a base to which said clamping member and cylinder are attachechsaid base having deflected portions tosupport aA candle and to provide openings for admission ofairto the cylinder.
