To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE B. VAN An'iwvnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Candles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric candles for Christmas trees, and has for its object to provide a construction whereby the lamp socket and attached wires may be inserted into the tubular member of the candle stick from the bottom thereof and thus permit the lamp socket to be applied to the candle stick without removing the Wires therefrom.
The invention consists further in the matters hereinafter described and more particu larly pointed out in the appended claims.

manner in which the lamp socket is inserted into the candle stick from beneath the bottom thereof.
As shown in the drawings, a candle stick embodying the features of my invention comprises a tubular member 1 open at both ends and secured to and extending above a base member 2, which in the instance illustrated is in the form of a star-shaped pan, although the same may have any other ornamental shape desired. Said pan 2 is provided in its bottom wall with a hole or opening 3 having a diameter slightly greater than that of the lamp socket 4:. The edge of said opening is turned upward to provide a flange 5 extending upward into the lower open end of the tube 1, the latter thusopening downward through the bottom of the pan 2 and the flange 5 strengthening the connection between the tube and the pan, as
shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The tube 1 is provided at its lower end with ears 6 inserted downward through slots in the bottom of the pan and bent back against the pan for connecting the tube 1 therewith. For detachably connecting the candle stick with a branch of a Christmas tree or other underlying support, I provide a spring clip 7 secured to the pan and extending beneath the bottom thereof. As shown in Fig. 3, said clip 7 is made U-shaped with its spaced side arms 8, 8 on opposite sides of the hole 3, so that no part of the spring extends over the hole 3 to hinder the insertion of the socket i into the tube 1 from beneath the pan or withdrawing the socket from the tube through the lower end thereof. When the clip 7 engages the branch of a tree or other part, the latter is held between the clip and the bottom of the pan 2, the side arms 8 of the clip engaging the branch at two separated points and thus serving to hold the candle stick upright and prevent .it from tipping.
' Before the incandescent lamp bulb 9 and "its socket i are applied to the candle stick,
such parts are separated, as shown in Fig. 5, and the socket 4: with its connected wires 10, 10 is inserted into the tube 1 through the opening 3 from beneath the base member 2 until the socket l. is brought to the open upper end of the tube 1. The bulb 9 is then screwed into the socket at the upper end of the tube, and, as the bulb has a diameter greater than the tube, the bulb may rest on the upper edge of the tube for holding the parts in place with the socket in the tube and the bulb 9 projecting beyond the same so that when ignited it may readily be seen and illuminate the candle stick. The wires 10 extend downward through the tube 1 and out of the same through the hole 3 in the pan. As the socket 4: may be inserted into the tube 1 from beneath the bottom of the pan 2,-itfollows that the wires 10, 10 may be drawn into the tube with the socket, thereby avoiding the necessity of being removed from the socket and permitting the latter to be readily and quickly attached to the candle stick with little difficulty.
It will of course be understood that for each light in the set for the tree, a candlestickof the construction described may be used, thus not only providing a means for attaching the lights to the tree, but produce the candle effect which is so effective as a means of illumination and ornament. The tube 1 and pan 2 may be painted in the same or different colors for ornamental effects and the pans may have the same or different shapes for the same reason.
I claim as my invention:
1. An electric candle for Christmas-trees and the like, comprising a hollow tubular member open at its ends, a lamp socket adapted 'to be inserted into andwithdrawn from said tubular member through its lower opening without disconnecting the 7 electrical conductors from the socket, an inl candes'cent lamp bulb adapted to be con nected'to said socket .from the upper end of said tubular member and tojrest thereon for holdingthe lamp and socketin place, and
means at the lowerend of said tubular mem} ber'for detachably securing the candle upon a lateral support such as a be-ugh of the Christmas-tree.
