\ To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, EDWARD A. WAGENER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oklahoma city, in the county of Oklahoma and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of 1 which the followin is a specification.
This invention re ates to actuating mechanism for wrenches or the like, and t object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means whereby the sliding) jaw of a wrench or similar structure may e easlly and quickly operated to move the said jaw and which also has its arts so constructed and arranged as to rigidly and effectively sustain the sliding 'aw on the shank of the wrench when the said jaw has been adjusted.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the description progresses the invention resides in the novel construction and arran ement of parts hereinafter fully descr1 ed and claimed.
In the drawings the figure represents a side view of the wrench with parts in section.
In the accompanying drawings and refer rin to the figure thereof, the numeral 1 designates the shank of an ordinary wrench and 2 the head thereof. The up or face 0 the wrench is provided with teet or serrations 3, the same being arranged preferably at an angle of 45.
4 indicates the sliding jaw. This jaw is formed with the usual legs or bails 5 which are adapted to envelop the shank 1. The upper portion of the jaw is formed with a recess or pocket 6 for the rece tion of the jaw actuating mechanism. ithin the pocket 6 is loosely mounted a shoe 7, the said shoe having its lower face provided with teeth 8, the same adapted to coact with the teeth 3 of the shank 1. The shoe 7 is formed adjacent one of its ends with a curved opening 9, the said openinlglbeing approximately semi-cylindrical. e ocket 6' is of an approximately rectan lar ormation and arran ed in communication with the upper and ront walls provided by the said pocket, the sliding jaw is formed with a second circular depression designated by the numeral 10.

The shoe 7 is formed with a rearwardly extending tail 15 and the movable jaw is provided with an opening or cut away portion 16 which communicates with the ocket 6. Pivoted between the walls provi ed by the said cut away portions 16, and as indicated by the numeral 17, is a finger 18. This finger is ada ted to extend within the pocket and to un erlie the tail 15 of the shoe 7. The opposite end of the said fin er is prefera y formed with a head 19, t e latter projecting a suitable distance beyond the rear face of the slidable jaw 4.
In operating the device, downward ressure is exerted upon the head 19 o the finger 18, causing the same to rotate upon its pivot 17 and to force the teeth of the shoe 7 out of engagement with the teeth of the shank. This movement, it will be noted, causes each of the teeth 8 to raise one after another, starting from the tooth adjacent the tail 15 and the link 11 acting as a swivel raises the last tooth and at the same time swings the shoe 7 rearwardly or toward the end of the pocket occupied by the finger 18.
