' and more particularly to that class of globe holders which employ a spring clamping or holding ring for grasping the neck of the globe.
My invention is designed to provide a spring ring of this character which may be easily expanded to permit the insertion of the neckof the globe and which, when upon being released, will grasp the neck and hold itcentrally, the centering action being accomplished by simple and eflicient means.
The invention includes the ,novel features of construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed, out in the appended claims.
-The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which 'Figure l is a side elevation partly broken away showing my invention applied to the collar and globe of a lamp, Fig. 2 is a sectional plan, and Fig. 3 is a separate plan view of the holding ring.
Referring by reference characters to the drawing, numeral 2 designates what is known to the trade as a collar and is representative of the globe supporting portion or gallery of either a gas or electric lamp, the neck 3 of the globe being received and held within this collar or gallery. Within this collar or gallery is located a spring holding ring 4 which is preferably formed from a single wire bent to form a nearly complete holding circle. It is provided at one side with a loop or bend 5 which extends through a slot 6 in the collar and serves as a support for the ring on that side. On the opposite side of the collar the ring is provided with radial portions 7 which extend outward through slots 8 and 8, these radial portions 7 serving to support the wire ring at the opposite side. it. will be understood that the ring is of spring metal aud sqeonstrueted that it tends to contract within the collar and grasp the neck of the globe. When in its contracted position the radial portions 7 approach each other until they abut against the adjacent ends of the slots 8 and 8. In
order to effect the expansion of the coil and 'at the same time to cause it to be centered when in itscontracted or globe holding position, I provide the radial portions 7 with curved spring members 9 which extend in opposite directions and bear against the outside surface of the collar, as shown. They terminate in handle portions 10 which may conveniently be formed by bending the ends of the spring members 9 into loops, as shown. By grasping these handle portions 10 between the thumb and finger and drawing them toward each other the ring is caused to expand within the collar to release the globe, while upon the release of the handle portions the ringis allowed to contract to grasp the groove of the globe and the bearing of the spring members 9 on the outer face of the collar serves to center the coil.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A lam-p collar or gallery having an expansible and contractible globe holding ring supported within the collar and provided with reversely turned approximately concentric operating members bearing against the outer face of the collar and serving to center the ring, and also efi'ect expansion thereof, substantially as described.
