E. F. HALL.
GAS 000K ATTACHMENT. APPLICATION FILED AUG. 23, 1911.

NM Mum v I GHQ-m g UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD F. HALL, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
GAS-COCK ATTACHMENT.
Patented July 23, 1912. Serial No. 645,505.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed August 23, 1911.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas-Cock Attachments, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in attachments for gas cocks.
In carrying out my invention, it is my object to provide a simple and effective device which may be attached to the inlet or service pipe or to the gas cock or burner, the same being provided with spaced arms which are adapted to normally cont-act with the stop pin of the valve of the burner to retain the said stop pin immovable to prevent the accidental turning of the valve when the said valve is either in its open or in its closed position.
The invention therefore has for its primary object the provision of means for preventing the accidental escape of gas into rooms which might cause the death or sickness of the occupants, and explosion or, if nothing Worse, a waste of gas.
With the above recited objects, and others of a similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure l is a side elevation of a gas cook provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional view upon the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the improvement.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the body of a gas burner which is secured to a service pipe 2 and has a stop flange 3. The numeral 4 designates the burner cook having a thumb or finger hold 5 forming means for turning it, and a stop 6 adapted to contact with a stop flange on one side of a body when the burner cock is turned to or is in closed position. All of these members and their oper ation being well known, the above reference is thought sufficient, and I will now describe my safety attachment and its operation in connection with a gas burner to produce the desired results above referred to.
My safety attachment embodies a yoke 6,
the same being adapted to straddle the burner directly to the rear of the cook or the same m y straddle the service pipe. The yoke 6 is constructed of a single piece of suitable material, being stamped to provide the side arms and the upper extremity of the said side arms are formed with registering openings, the latter being adapted what may be termed an apron 9 and the sides or edges of the said apron are bent in a plane substantially parallel with the sides of the yoke to provide ears 10.
The numeral 11 designates the stop body of the member proper. This member is also constructed of a single strip of suitable material, some resilient metal preferred. The strip forming the stop has its rear portion cut and bent at right angles to provide the oppositely arranged fingers 12, the same having suitable openings which register with similar openings in the cars 10, and these openings are adapted to receive a suitable pivot pin 13. The metal between the fingers is bent upwardly and over the body proper of the stop to provid a lip 14, the said lip adapted to receive one of the end convolutions of a small helical upwardly or toward the yoke 6. The portion of the stop beyond its body is slitted longitudinally and the metal adjacent the opposite edges of the said stop are bent at right angles to each other to provide the spaced arms 16, while the metal between the said arms is bent downwardly and is curved to form a finger hold 17. It is to be understood that when the yoke is positioned upon the burner the arms 16,- being forced upwardly through the medium of the spring 15 engages within the space adjacent the stop flange 2 of the burner, and one of the arms is adapted to contact with the said pin provided upon the cook of the burner. In this manner, it will be noted that the cook cannot be rotated until the finger hold 17 is grasped and the arms 16 of the stop are swung downwardly upon the pivot 13 out of engagement with the said stop pin. A release of the finger hold will again swing the arms upwardly so to recelve a securing element, such as a that the second arm will contact with the opposite face of the stop after the cock has been turned,
In order to provide means whereby the device may be adjusted to lit any make of burners, l have provided the resilient arms 16 with registering o ienings, the said openings adapted to receive a bolt 18 which. is provided with a thumb or other nut 19, whereby the said arms may be swung toward or away from each other as desired. The bolt 18 is further provided with stop nuts 20, the same being arranged adjacent the inner face of one or both ot the arms and whereby the said arms are effectively sustained in their spread or opened posi tion.
Having thus fully described the said invention, what I claim 1. A safety attachment for burners embodying a yolre adapted to be secured thereon, a stop member pivotally connected with the yoke, the said stop member being provided with a pair of longitudinally extending spaced arms, a spring between the stop and yoke for normally forcing one of the arms against the stop pin of the cool; of the burner, a finger hold for the stop, and
means for adjusting the arms either toward or away from each other.
2. A safety device for gas cocks embodying a yoke adapted to be secured thereon,
said yoke being provided with a depending apron and with ears formed with the apron, a stop member, said stop member comprising a body having one of its ends formed with rearwardly extending fingers, a pivotal connection. between the fingers and the ears, the said body being integrally formed with a lip, a spring engaging the lip and the yoke adapted to swing the stop upwardly or toward the yoke, the said body being integrally formed with a pair of spaced arms,
the portion of the body between the arms being bent to provide a curved finger hold, and one of the arms, through the medlum of the spring, adapted to normally contact with the stop pm of the burner cock when the said cock is turned elther on or ott in testimony whereoi' l aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
