To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS A. CORNELIUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plumbers Links, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to plumbers links, and its object is to provide an improved device of that character which shall be simple in construction, effective in operation, and economical in manufacure. This object is attained by, and my invention finds a preferable embodiment in, the devices hereinafter described, illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my link; Fig. 2 is an edgewise view of the same; Fig. 3 is a view of the same attached to a chain and plug; Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view of parts showing the disengageable connection -between the link-members, the same being seen edgewise; Fig. 5 is a front view of a modified construction of my link, and Fig. 6 is an edgewise view of the same.
The two link- members 1 and 2 are pivotally connected at 3. A lug 4 preferably formed by pressing up a portion of one limb of link 1 extends transversely such limb in a line at an angle with the direction in which the link members swing on pivot 3. A corresponding recess 5 preferably similarly formed on the corresponding limb of link-member 2 and similarly extending transversely said limb, is adapted to engage Y and hold the lug (in the closed position of the link) by spring pressure which is preferably supplied by the spring material of the link-members themselves. This pressure is sufiicient to retain the link-members in closed position, but may be readily overcome by forcing the link-members to swing apart. Fig. 3 shows a link of this construction connecting the end of a bath tub chain 6 to a bath tub plug 7. It will be seen that inasmuch as the lug and recess extend across the link-members, their operative engagement is not prevented by a considerable inaccuracy in placing the pivotal connection 3 of such members.
In the modified construction of the link shown in Figs. 5 and 6, a shoulder 8 merely is formed on a limb of link-member 1 and extending in a direction at an angle with the swinging movement of the link-members, against which shoulder the extremity 9 of the corresponding limb of the other linkmember 2 abuts in the links closed position. It will be seen that in this construction no recess or lug need be formed on one member which is thus perfectly plain, and a shoulder merely is formed on a limb of the other member.
Not confining myself to the details of construction shown and described, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described,
a pair of cooperating link-members pivotally connected, one having a lug portion extending across a limb thereof at an angle to the direction of the interrelative swinging movement of the link-members and projecting from the face of said link member in a direction substantially parallel with the axis of the pivotal connection of the linkmembers, said lug being adapted to engage and yieldingly hold a limb of the other linkmember, at least one link-member being resilient.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of cooperating link-members pivotally connected, one having a shoulder extending at an angleto the direction of the interrelative swinging movement of the linkmembers and projecting from the face of said link-member in a direction substantially parallel with the axis of the pivotal connection of the link-members, against which shoulder the extremity of a limb of the other link-member is adapted to abut and to be yieldingly held thereby when the device is in closed position, at least one linkmember being resilient.
