Be it known that I, AUoUs'r Aliens, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hart-ford county, State of Connecticut,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to looks, and is particularly concerned with locks adapted for use on corridor doors of hotels, etc.
It includes in connection with the usual dead bolt customarily operated from the outside by a series of keys-such as the guest or change, master, grand-master, display and emergency keysmeans operable only from the inside, which will roject a second bolt, and which, if the first ead bolt is also projected, may be operable to retract both bolts to permit the door to be opened, and which furthermore will permit the second bolt being retracted by the use of a certain key, which I will term the emergency key.
More specifically, the invention consists in providmg in connection with the second bolt, operating means therefor which will actuate the tumblers of all bolts at the same time and permit the rojection and retraction of said bolts as liercinafter explained.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangements of parts, a preferred embodiment of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring to the drawin s b numerals, 1 indicates the lock case, 2 t 1e ace plate and 3 indicates what I will term the first dead bolt. 4 represents the second dead bolt and 5 the ordinary latch bolt operable b means of the roll-back 6 through u kno spindle (not shown). The first dead bolt 3 isoperatcd directly 1) keys inserted from the outside through a eyhole in the cover plate, the aperture for the stum )s of such keys being indicated at 7 in the ack plate of the casing. This first bolt is provided with a plurality of locking tumblers, such as 8, having the usual gate 9 cooperating with the fence 10 carried by said bolt 3. Some of the tumblers 8 are provided with rear extensions 11 which rest upon the upper end of a tumbler connecting bar 12. Others of these tumblers are provided with rear extensions 13 (shown in dotted lines, as only the lowest or bottom tumbler is shown 'in the drawing) which engage a slot 14 in the upper end of the connecting bar.
As I have before stated, the tumblers of the first dead bolt are preferably designed for operation by a series of keys'in a manner well known in the art. The specific construction of these tumblers forms no part of the present invention, it being essential, however, that the tumblers be rovided with means for engagement with t e connecting bar 12, the other features described being common and well known in the art.
The connecting bar 12 is suitably guided in the case for longitudinal movement and extends lon itudinally of said case and at its lower en is formed with a transverse extension 15 which extends in between pins or lugs 16 formed on the free end of a pivoted tumbler operating lever 16 whose specific construction and o eration will be more fully described hereinafter.
The second dead bolt 4 is provided with the usual fence 17 and with a tumbler 18 gated at 19 to cooperate with said fence in the usual manner. This tumbler may be operated by the usual key inserted from the inside through the keyhole 20. This tumbler 18 is provided at its free end with an extension 21 engaging in a slot 22 formed in the connecting bar 12 intermediate its ends. A walking-beam lever 23 is connected at one end to the second dead bolt 4 and has the usual connection at its other end with the first dead bolt 3. The second dead bolt, therefore, owing to this connection, may be (projected without projectin the first dca bolt. Projection of the lilttcr, however, after the second dead bolt has been pro'ectcd, will retract said second dead bolt, an the first dead bolt, owing to its limited free connection with the end of lever 2.3, can then be retracted without one of the bolts, operates to raise the con-' meeting bar '12-and the tumblers of the other bolt whereby said action is possible.
I have heretofore stated that the first dead bolt and its tumblers are of the type operable by aseries of keys, such as so-ealled change, master, grand-master, display and emergency keys, the display being bitted so thatwhen said bolt is projected byit, no key except the display, key, .or the emergency key,can retract the same. The emergeney key is so bitted that when the first dead bolt is projected by it, no other key can retract the same. well-known in the art.
In order to prevent unlocking of the'door from the outside by means of any key other than the emergency key when the door is locked from the inside, the dead bolt 4 is formed with .a ward 24 at its rear end, which, when the said bolt is projected, takes a osition in line with the outer keyhole and consequently blocks the full insertion of the other keys mentioned, by reason of their hitting. The hitting of the emergency key, however, is such that when it is inserted from the outside, it will clear the ward 24 and consequently can be fully inserted and turned to retract the second dead bolt 4 by first rojecting the dead bolt 3. Then by retracting the bolt 3, the door will be unlocked as heretofore described.
I have stated that the second dead bolt is'adapted for operation by a key inserted from the inside through the keyhole 20. I provide, however, additional .means which will not only operate the second dead bolt in both directions independently of a key,
but which will also directly lift the tumblers of both dead bolts to )ermit this action. To this end I provide elow the dead bolt 4 a bolt actuating, member 25 which may, if desired, be formed as a third dead bolt, as indicated by dotted lines. As in the case with the two upper bolts, this member 25 slides in suitable guides in the lock case and is further provided with an upper extension 26 fitting in a notch 27 formed in the lower edge of bolt 4. Pivoted at one end on this member 25 is the tumbler lever 16 having the usual tumbler spring abuttin against a lug 28 formed on the part 25 an ,normally holding the lever thrown downwardly. 'At its outer or free end, this lever member is recessed to permit of the insertion therethrough of a thumb turn hub 29 carrying at its innerend rock arms 80. These features are I have heretofore stated that the tumbler lever 16 at its lower end is provided with lugs 16 between which rest the transverse extension 15 of the tumbler connecting bar 12. It is obvious that by rocking the thumb turn hub 29 either way, a cam face 32 will contact with the pin or lug 31 and thereby raise the tumbler lever 16. This movement of the'tumbler lever will raise the tumbler connecting bar 12 which, by reason of its connection with the tumblers of both the first two dead bolts, will raise their tumblers to permit said bolts to be projected or retracted.
The rock arms 30 on the thumb turn hub 29 are adapted to project and retract the dead bolt 4, and to this end, the member 25 adjacent its inner end, is provided with a lug 33 which lies in the arc of movement of the ends of rock arms 30 so that when these arms have been rocked to lift the tumbler connecting bar 12, a further rotation will brin the end of one of the bars against one side, or the other, of this lug 33 and move the member 25 from its position as shown in Fig. 1 to the left or forwardly as shown in Fig. 2, or vice versa, to project or retract the dead bolt 4: through the connection therewith of the extension 26. This projecting and retracting operation of the rock arms will be clear from Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, in which, respectively, the rock arms are shown in bolt retracted and projected position with reference to the lug 33.
To recapitulate'briefly, the operation of my lock is as follows: An occupant of a room who is desirous of protecting himself from intrusion may, either by means of his key or by the inside thumb turn, project the second dead bolt 4. If, while thus locked in, some one on the outside should endeavor to enter the room or apartment, the ward 24 of the dead bolt 4 will prevent an key, excepting the emergenc key, from ully entering the lock case anc thereby prevent said key from operating the tumblers. The proprietor, however, can, in case of emergency, use his emergency key and operate the tumblers of the first dead bolt 3 and first project the same, thereby retracting the inside dead bolt and then retract the same and enter.
In case the dead bolt 3 should be projected while there is an occupant within the room or a artment, the latter may freely unlock the oor either by a key, or the thumb turn if the key is not available or mis laced.
For convenience of expression may refer in the claims to the first dead bolt 3 as the outside dead bolt and the second dead bolt 4 as the inside dead bolt, because in the lock shown the first bolt is projected b a he inserted in the look from the outsic 0, am the second bolt is projected by a key or by a thumb turn at the inside.
While I have described a s ecific embodiment of my invention, it is o vious that the same is susceptible to many modifications.
What I claimis:
1. In a lock, two bolts arranged to be in dependently projected by keys inserted from opposite sides of a door, a connection between said bolts whereby the projection of one will retract the other, an auxiliary means operable from one side of the door only for pro'ectin and retracting one of said bolts in epen ently of a key, tumbler mechanism for each of said bolts, a connec tion between said tumbler mechanisms whereby the proper positionin of one of said tumbler mechanisms wil simultaneousl properly position the other tumbler mecianism, and a connection between said auxiliary bolt controlling means and said tumbler connecting mechanism whereby both of said bolts may be operated by said auxiliary operating means.
2. In a lock, two bolts arranged to be independently projected by keys inserted from opposite sides of a door, a connection between said bolts whereby the projection of one will retract the other, an auxilia bolt operable from one side of the door on y for projecting and retracting one of said first two bolts independently of a key, tumbler mechanism for each of said bolts, a connection between said tumbler mechanisms whereby the proper positionin of one of said tumbler mechanisms wil simultaneously properly position the other tumbler mccianism, and a connection between said auxiliary bolt and said tumbler connecting mechanism whereby both of said first two bolts may be operated by said auxiliary operating bolt.
3. In a look, a plurality of bolts including key-operable outside and inside dead bolts a connection between said dead bolts whereby the rojection of one will retract the other tumbler mechanisms for each of said dea bolts, a connection between'said tumbler mechanisms whereby an inside or outside key will actuate simultaneously said tumbler mechanisms and ermit the projection and retraction of said dead bolts, and means operable only from one side of the door and independent of a key for actuatin said tumbler connection whereby both 0 said dead bolts may be operated by said independent means.

In a lock, a plurality of bolts including key-operable outside and inside dead bolts a connection between said dead bolts whereby the rojection of one will retract the other. tum lcr mechanisms for each of said dead bolts, a connection between said t-umbler mechanisms whereb an inside or outside key will actuate simu taneously said tumbler mechanisms and permit the projection and retraction of said dead bolts, means operable from the inside of the door only and independent of a key for actuating said tumbler connection whereby bothof said dead bolts may be operated by said independent means, and means whereby a certain key operable from the exterior of the door may retract said inside dead bolt when projected.

In a lock, two bolts arranged to be independently projected by keys inserted from opposite sides of a door, a connection be tween said bolts whereby the projection of one will retract the other an auxiliary boltactuating member operable from one side of the door onl for projecting and retracting one of said olts independently of a key,
tumbler mechanism for each of said bolts, a connection between said tumbler mechanisms whereby the proper positioning of one of said tumbler mechanisms will simultaneousl properly position the other tumbler mec anism, an operatin member for said tumbler connection, an actuating means cooperating with said tumbler operating member and with said bolt-actuating member to pro )erly position said tumbler mechanisms and to actuate said bolts.

In a lock, the combination of a keyoperable outside dead bolt, a key-operable inside dead bolt, a connection therebet-ween, tumbler mechanism for each of said bolts, a tumbler bar connecting each of said tumbler mechanisms, a bolt-actuating member auxiliary to said inside key 0 eratively connected with said inside dead olt, a pivoted tumbler-actuating lever having operable connection with said tumbler bar and means cooperating with said lever and boltactuating member adapted to lift said tumbler bar and actuate simultaneously the tumbler mechanisms connected therewith and adapted to move said bolt-actuating member to project and retract said inside dead bolt and also to retract said outside dead bolt when rojected.

In a lock, t e combination of an outside dead bolt, a key-.operable inside dead bolt a connection therebetween, tumbler mechanism for each of said bolts, a bar connecting both of said tumbler mechanisms, an extra inside dead bolt connected with said first mentioned inside bolt, a pivoted tumbler actuating lever, an o erable connection between said lever an said tumbler bar, and means operable from inside the door cooperating with said lever and extra inside bolt and ada ted to actuate simul-- taneously said tumb er mechanisms and to project and retract both of said inside bolts.

In a lock, two bolts arranged to be independently projected by keys lnserted from opposite sides of a door, a connection between said bolts whereby the projection of one will retract the other, an auxiliary bolt-- actuating member ioperable from onelside of the door only, tforsprojecting and retracting connection between said tumbler mechanisms whereby the pro ripositioning of one of said tumblerjmec ianisms will simultaneously properly position the 1 other tumbler mechanism, a pivoted tumbler operating lever operative y connected with said tumbler connection, and a rotatable actuator cooperating with said pivoted lever and said bolt-actuating member and constructed and arranged so that a partial rotation will properly position said tumbler mechanisms, and afurther rotation will operate said boltgctluating member to project or retract a 9. a rotatable actuator operable from one side of the door only independently of a key and provided with arms adapted to engage with said lever and auxiliary bolt abutments, said arms beingconstructed and arranged so that a partial rotation will properly position said tumbler mechanisms, and a further rot-ation will operate said auxiliary bolt member to project or retract a bolt.

In a look, a plurality of bolts including key-operable outside and inside dead bolts, a connection between said dead bolts whereby the projection of one will retract the other, tumbler mechanisms for each of said dead bolts, a connection between said tumbler mechanisms whereby an inside or outside key will actuate simultaneously said tumbler mechanisms and ermit the projection and retraction of suit dead bolts, means operable from the inside of the door only and independent of a key for actuating said tumbler connection whereby both of said dead bolts may be operated by said independent means, in combination with a pluralit of keys capable of operating one of the olts from the outside, and a blockin out device to prevent the insertion of one 0? said keys from the outside into operative position when another of said bolts has been projected by means from the inside.
