oqos LOCK AND LATCH.
To (all ,whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VVILL liM I-I. Horn, a citizen of the United States, residin at Providence, in the State of Rhode Islam have in- 5 vented a new and useful Improvement in Door Locks and-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of 10 the parts of the lock and latch, whereby it is made adapted for ready attachment to doors 1 of different thicknesses, and in the improved construction of the lock mechanism of the i knob, as hereinafter fully set forth. l5 In-the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents the outer sidexview of a portion of a door to which my imp'rovedlock and latch is attached. Fig. 2 represents the edgewiew of the door, showing the end of the hitchbolt. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3of Fig. 2. Fig. fiJfBPIB- sents a horizontal section of the siotted lockingtube of the outer knob. Fig. 5 reprecents an end view of the key-receiving case removed from the knob, showing the form of the keyhole. Fig. 6 represents aside view of the same. Fig. 7 represents a section taken on the line 7 7 of Fi 6. Fig. 8 represents an enlar ed section ta on on the'line 8 8 of Fig. 0 2. ig; 9 represents an enlarged detail section ta on on the line 9 9 of Fig. 1. Fig. 10 represents a detail section, as in Fi 3 but showing the position of the parts of t e latch mechanism when the inner and outer knobs 5 are locked together for simultaneous movements: Fig. 11 re resents a section taken on the line 11 11 of *i 3. Fig. 12 represents a section taken on t e line 12 12 of Fig. 3. Fig. 13 re esents a section taken on the iine 4o 13 13 of i 3. Fig. 14 re resents an end view of the Eey for the lock 0 the outer knoh.
In the drawin s, A represents a portion of the stiie of the cor, to which the lock and latch is attached.
4 5 B to resents the latch-holding tube, and C the sli in latch-bolt held within the tube; .7
The sife plates D D of the lock and latch are secured to each other by'means of the screws E E, as shown in Fig. 1 and in the detail section Fig. 9, and the inner knob F is provided with an opening G of square crosssection and with the screw-attached coilar H. which is held in the circular recess I of the Specification of Letters Patent.

late D, and between the inner end of the mob F and the side of the stile .of the doo 5 5 is placed the loose washer K. 'llhe' inneren portion a of the spindle L is squ'hred t'ojit oosely within the squared opening G of the knob F, and the lower side of the spindle L is provided with the arm M, which enters the so slot-openirw b 01" the sliding latchholt C, as shown in i s. 8 and 9. The outer end of the spindle is provided with the flattened projection c, which en'tters the notch c' in the inner end of the sliding locking-piece N the said locking-piece being heid tor sliding movement within the horde! the locking-tube O. The tube 0 is provided with the flange d, which is screw-attached to the inner end of the outer knob F and also provided at its outer end with the angular hook-formed slotopening e. The sliding locking-piece N is provided at its outer end with an annular flange which is adapted for movement back and forth within the limitin -space g 5 between the outer end of the tubei) and the inner end of the keg-receiving case P, the said lockingiece be n also provided with the uidingin k, which is held in the angular s ot-opening e of the tube 0 and actuated in the outward direction by means of the spiral spring Q. The key-receiving case I is made in two parts 'i and j, which when pieced together and held within the bore of the knob F will form the key-receiving chamber is and 8 5 also form the keyhole Z. The key R is provided with the notches m m, adapted to receive pins n, which project inward from the peripheral wall 0 of the chamber is, and also provided with the offset ii p, projecting forgo ward from one side of the key R, as shown in Figs. it) and 14, and the inner end of the case F is provided with an o ening which is oilset from the side of thee washer and throu h which the projecting ii p passes when the key is roperly inserte into the chamber 7:.
The key is to be inserted into the chamber it when the keyhole is in the vertical position shown in Fig. 1 and then turned to a hori- 'zontal position past the pins 11., which pass through the notches m m of the key, as shown iii Fi 9 and 10. Then by pushin forward on his key the projecting lip p wi ass throu h the opening (1 and serve to force ack the s iding locking-piece N against the reverse action of the spring Q, and by this means the flattened projection c of the spinle L will be caused to engage with the notch of the sliding locking-piece N, as shown in 10, and then upon turning the knob F the uidin -pin it will be caused to strike the side 'fiiof t e slot-opening e, and then upon withdrawing the key R the pin it will be forced b the action of the spring Q back to the end .9 the hook-formed slot 6, with the flattened rojection c of the spindle L and the note 0' of the sliding locking-piece N still in engagement, and then the movement of either of the knobs F F will serve to withdraw theilatch-bolt O to open the door. Now in order to prevent the withdrawal of the latch ebolt by means of the outer knob F the key is to be again inserted and the sliding locking-piece forced back as before to its extreme limit of movement and the knob F then turned in the reverse direction, so as to bring the guiding-pin it back to the portion t of the slot-opening e, and then upon drawing back the ke R the notch c of the sliding locking-piece I\ will be carried back out of engagement with the flattened projection c of the 'spindle L, and then the outer knob F may be; turned without acting upon the latch mechanism to withdraw the bolt, and entrance fram the outer side of the door will be prevented:
