FRANK IVE. FLEISHMAN, 0F MERNA, NEBRASKA.
DOUBLETREE.
Application filed January 12, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. FLEISH- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merna, in the county of Custer, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doubletrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in doubletrees, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the etliciency and utility of devices of this character without material increase of cost of manufacture or weight.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim; and, in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the im- 2 is a transverse section 1, Fig. 3 is an end proved device, Fig. on the line 22 of Fig. elevation.
The improved device comprises a body formed of a section of an L-beam and comprising webs 11-10. The bodyportion may be formed from an L-bar of any suitable gage, and the gage will be varied in proportion to the size or weight of the vehicle to which the device is applied. For instance double trees which are designed for use in connection with heavy farm wagons, freight wagons, and the like, will be heavier than those employed for buggies and carriages, but the heavier and lighter devices will not differ materially in other respects.
The improved device is adapted equally for all sizes and weights of vehicles, but is designed more particularly for the heavier grades of farm and freight wagons, but it will be understood that it is not designed to limit the invention for use in connection with any specific form or style of vehicle.
Connected by rivets 12 or other suitable fastening means to the member 1011 centrally thereof is a block 13, preferably of wood, and preferably cut away so that its lower face comes flush with the lower face of the web 11, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3,

and extending for a considerable distance beyond the outer edge of the same. The block 13 is provided with an aperture 1 1 to receive the central. pin by which the doubletree is coupled to the vehicle tongue or other draft appliance. By this arrangement the lower face of the web 11 and the block 13 will bear flatly upon the draft tongue, as will be obvious.
Extending over the outer edge of the block 13 is a relatively long plate 15, and secured to the block by the same rivets 12 by which the block is secured to the body. The member 15 is extended at its ends and bent toward the body and connected by rivets 16 or other suitable fastening means to the web 10 of the body at its ends. The member 15 thus forms a combined brace and truss ele ment, which not only supports the block but likewise supports the body and very materially strengthens and stiifens the same. Near its ends the member 15 is bent rearwardly as shown at 17 between the rivets 16 to form sockets to receive the pins by which the swingletrees are coupled to the doubletrec. The webs 1011 and the combined brace and truss member 15 may be of any required thickness, but for an ordinary double-tree the webs will be about onefourth of an inch thick, one and three-quarter inches wide, and the body 1011 will be about forty-five inches long. For a double-tree having the body and truss member of above proportions the block 15 will generally be about ten inches long and three and one-half inches wide, but these dimensions may be varied as required.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and possesses great strength combined with lightness and durability.
What is claimed is A double tree comprising a section of an gular metal having one flange disposed vertically and the other flange disposed horizontally, a rectangular block of wood mounted centrally upon said horizontal flange and having one edge of its bottom recessed to receive the adjacent portion of the horizontal flange with their bottom faces flush with each other, the block having a central vertical opening communicating with an opening in the horizontal flange and a truss member zontal flange.
