WRITING-TABLET.
Patented July 16, 1912.
Original application filed January 18, 1908, Serial No. 411,445. Divided and this application filed May 2, 1908. Serial No. 430,619.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELMER MQCLELLAN AFRICA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntingdon, in the county of Huntingdon and State of. Pennsylvania, and BARTI-IOLOMEVV E. MGSHEEI-IY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Nutley, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVriting-Tablets,
of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of our application No. 411,445, filed January 18,
This invention relates to tablets or pads of writing paper, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.
It has heretofore been proposed to supply with each tablet or pad a guide sheet having guide lines ruled transversely of the pad. Such guide sheet has been useful only in using the paper in its .full length condition without folding.
According to our present invention we provide guiding means which are adapted to be conveniently utilized in connection with the paper sheets either when the latter are used lengthwise in various sizes for commercial letter writing, etc, or when they are folded for social letter writing in va' rious sizes.
According to the present invention we provide a guide sheet which is substantially the same size as the writing sheets composing the tablet, and which is preferably attached to the tablet near the end of one side thereof. The guide sheet is preferably composed of two sections which are hinged together so that one part may fold over the,
other. Preferably the sheet is constructed in one pieceand creased to form the hinge joint.
By our invention at least three sides of the writing sheet can be written upon with the assistance of the guide, without-detaching the writing sheet from its connection with the tablet. The guide sheet is also applicable for use in connection with the fourth side of'the writing sheet when the latter is detached.
According to our invention in its preferred form the guide sheet is provided with longitudinal and transverse guide lines Instead of providing the guide sheet with ruled lines, it may be provided with any other suitable designs.
The invention also includes other features of novelty which will be hereinafter referred to.
Referring to the drawings illustrating an embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tablet having our improved guide sheet connected therewith; Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 on a larger scale; Figs. 3, 4: and 5 are views illustrating the positions of the parts when writing upon four sides of a folded writing sheet. Fig. 6 is a view of one form of our improved guide sheet detached.
Referring to the drawings, let A designate the tablet as a whole which is shown as composed of a number of elongated sheets a connected along one of the short sides of the tablet at 7). Preferably a backboard 0 is provided asis common, anda cover a? which is shown as connected to the tablet at its binding edge, or that edge at which the sheets are attached in the form shown. Preferably the dimensions of the tablet are such that when the sheets are folded along the dotted line (2 (Fig 1) the lower edge will meet the top edge, so that the paper assumes the proper form for correspondence, etc.
- B indicates our improved guide sheet, which is of substantially the same dimen sions as the letter sheets of the tablet. It is composed of two parts B B which are hinged together as shown, so that one of such parts mayturn completely. over upon the other. By preference the sheet is formed of a single piece of paste board or other material which is creased along the line m to provide the necessary hinge joint. Preferably the guide sheet B is hinged to the tablet atone of the sides of the latter by means of a strip of paper or-canvas j which is glued to the backboard c and to the under side of the guide sheet B. The hinge f does not extend the entirelength of the tablet, but only the width of the part B of the guide sheet, so that the part B is left free to fold over on the part B The hinge f is preferably stiff laterally, so that when the guide sheet is folded over upon the top of the tablet it rests securely thereon with its lines parallel to the edges of the tablet and does not move from side to side in use.
When the guide sheet B is used to provide writing lines, it is preferably ruled lengthwise with lines 9 and. transversely with lines it on its upper side, so that when the guide sheet is placed beneath the uppermost writ-ing sheet, the latter may be written upon either longitudinally or transversely as desired. Preferably the lower half B of the guide sheet is provided on its under side with lines 9 which extend longitudinally of the tablet, and such lines may also be continued upon the under side of the upper half B if desired. Both sides of the guide sheet may also be provided with one or more lines h, if, which extend transversely of the tablet for a purpose to be described.
In the use of the tablet when the writing sheet is to be folded to correspondence size, the guide sheet is brought down over the face of the tablet, and the upper writing sheet of the latter is folded with the portion B over upon the portion B of the sheet. During this movement the hinge joint be tween the two halves of the guide sheet serves as a guide for folding the writing sheet. When the latter is folded, the first page of the writing sheet lies in proper position for writing with the under side of the part B of the guide sheet immediately beneath it. During writing the transverse line it may be used to indicate the proper margin at the left hand side of the sheet. In-
' stead of one line ii any number may be used,
so that the margin may be varied at will. A line 7L may'also be provided to form a guide on the opposite side.
After the first page of the writing sheet is written upon, the parts are restored to their original position and the entire sheet lifted, so that the guide sheet may be passed beneath it into the position shown in- Fig. 4;. In this position the second andthird pages of the writing sheet are brought into place for use. When the third page is completed, if it is desired to utilize the fourth page, the guide sheet with the writing sheet is swung outwardly, thereby detaching the writing sheet from the tablet. As the fold in the writing sheet is still preserved, it is, easily slipped over the upper part B of the guide sheet with the fourth page in position for writing. During the operation of writing upon the second, third and fourth pages, any of the lines h, h, k may serve as marginal guide lines. It is, of course, within this feature of the invent-ion, however, to omit all of the transverse lines h with the exception of those which are intended to serve as marginal guides. We prefer, however, to provide a complete set of transverse lines h, since these are very desirable in case it is required to use the full length writing sheet without folding. .For this purpose the guide B is slipped beneath the writing sheet in a well known manner.
According to our invention we may form the guide sheet B of blotting paper, although it may be made of any other suitable mate rial, as hereinbefore described. When the guidesheet is incorporated in a tablet, a separate blotting sheet a is preferably provided, as shown in Fig. 1, wherein it is illustrated as attached to the under side of the cover. V
By the present invention the use of correspondence paper in tablet form is greatly facilitated. The guide sheet B folds down accurately upon the writing sheets without detaching the latter, so that such sheets are practically held in position without any effort on the part of the user. The guide sheet is immediately available for all of the pages of the writing sheet, and renders the use of the tablet extremely convenient.
It will be understood that while the sheet B is preferably attached to the tablet, it may be detached therefrom and still be very useful in connection with tablets or other writing paper. In Fig. 7 we have illustrated the sheet B detached. Such guide sheet can be very cheaply manufactured, there being but little difierence between its cost and that of the guide sheets now in. common use.
It is obvious that; various modifications may be made in the construction herein shown without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What we claim is 1. A tablet having a plurality of paper beneath it, said guide sheet having a portion only of one of its edges connected to a side of the tablet other than the connecting edge of said paper sheets, and said guiding provisions comprising guide lines extending parallel to the side of thetablet to which said guide sheet is attached.
