WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 9, 1912.
Application filed March 13, 1911. Serial No. 614,072.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. JAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moscow, in the county of Latah and State of Idaho, have invented a new and useful lVrench, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Wrenches, and has for its object to provide an improved wrench wherein the jaws may be conveniently adjusted wit-h respect to each other.
lVith the above and other objects in view this invention is embodied in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein,-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the wrench. Figs. 2. and 3 are sectional views taken longitudinally through the wrench and in planes at right angles to each other. Fig. A is a fragmental detail of one side of the wrench. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of the latch.
Referring in detail to the drawings, there is designated at 8 an elongated U-shaped member having one arm thereof extended to form a stem S, the said arm having a notch 9 in its inner face. A fixed jaw F is secured to the outer end of the stem S and a jaw M is slidable on the said stem, the stem passing through an opening A in the said jaw. The jaw M has a rack bar 5 projecting therefrom and extending snugly between the arms of the U-shaped member, the teeth of the rack sliding against the said notched arm and the stem. A plate H is secured on each side of the U-shaped member and the said plates constituting with the said U- shaped member the handle of the wrench, one of the said plates having an aperture 90 therethrough in alinement with the aforesaid notch and the other plate having an elongated longitudinal opening 20 therein with its inner end adjacent the said notch. A latch 13 fits slidably in the notch 9 and has teeth 11 on one side thereof and at the end toward the plate having the elongated opening therein and the other end of the said latch projects through the aperture in the other plate. The said latch also has a lip on the end thereof having the teeth, but on the opposite side thereof which is adapted to bear against the U-shaped member. A leaf spring 21 is secured to the plate having the elongated opening at the outer end of the opening and fits within the said opening with its free end bearing against the end of the latch.
In use, the spring 21 normally forces the latch into posit-ion to bring the lip 12 against the U-shaped member 8 whereupon the teeth 11 of the latch engage the teeth of the rack and retain the jaws in fixed position. The latch may be readily pressed against the tension of the spring 21 to disengage the teeth 11 from the rack and thereby permit the movable jaw to be slid along the stem S to adjust the jaws as desired or necessary, and upon releasing the latch, the latch is again engaged to the rack bar.
It will therefore be seen that this wrench is simple and convenient in use and is of a novel construction, and is capable of inexpensive manufacture.
What is claimed is A wrench comprising an elongated U- shaped member having one arm extended to form a stem, the said arm having a notch in its inner face, a fixed jaw secured to the outer end of the said stem, a jaw slidable on the said stem and having a rack bar projecting therefrom and extending snugly between the arms of the U-shaped member, the teeth of the rack sliding against the said notched arm and the stem, a plate secured on each side of the U-shaped member and constituting therewith a handle, one of the said plates having an aperture theret-hrough in alinement with the aforesaid notch and the other plate having an elongated longitudinal opening therein with its inner end adjacent to the said notch, a sliding latch fitting in the said notch and having teeth on one side and at the end thereof toward the plate having the elongated opening, the other end of the said latch projecting through the said aperture, the said latch also having a lip on the end thereof having the teeth and on the side opposite the teeth which is adapted to bear against the said U-shaped member, and a leaf spring secured as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signato the last mentioned plate at the outer end ture in the presence of two Witnesses. of the opening therein and fitting Within WILLIAM N JAY the said opening With its free end bearing against the end of the said 1atch,.substan- Witnesses: tially as and for the purpose set forth. J. M. THOMPSON,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing A. MUNRo.
