REMOVABLE HEAD FOR BARRELS AND LIKE RECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 9, 1912. Serial No. 689,537.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. STAPLES, a citizen of the United States, and a resi dent of Anahuac, in the county of Chambers and State of Texas, have invented an Improved Removable Head for Barrels and Like Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention is a. removable head or cover particularly adapted for metallic barrels and other like receptacles. The body of the barrel is provided interiorly with a fixed ledge or flange upon which the head is supported and to which it may be clamped by means of devices that include a hasp adapted to be secured by a padlock or other device.
The details of construction and combina tions of parts are hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention applied to a metallic barrel. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the same.
The numeral 1 indicates the cylindrical body, and 2 the circular removable head, or cover, of a metallic barrel. The head 2 is supported upon an annular ledge or flange 3 secured to the body 1, interiorly, and on the upper end of the same, by means of a hook-shaped lip 3. A leather or other elastic gasket l is laid and supported upon the ledge 3, and a narrow fiat ring 5 is in turn laid upon the gasket and is secured thereto by means of screw-eyes 6, which pass through it and the gasket and ledge, and to which nuts are applied on the under side, as shown in Fig. 2. The cover 2 has a central conical portion, and a flat rim 2 which rests upon that portion of the gasket which projects inward beyond the ring 5.
The means for securing and clamping the cover in place are as follows. Two obtuseangled rods 7 are pivoted to the screw-eyes (3 and adapted to fold inward and overlie the conical portion of the head 2. A hasp 8 is pivoted to the head 2 and its free end is provided with a slot adapted to pass over a staple 9 also forming an attachment of the head 2. The clamping devices 7 are made of such dimensions that they are adapted to lie between the hasp pivot and the staple, as
shown in both figures. When laid in such I position and the hasp closed over them, the latter applies pressure and leverage, so that the head is pressed tightly upon the gasket l and forms a hermetic seal for the barrel. The leverage is mainly due to the fact that the devices 7 require to be pressed down in order to cause them to lie close on the head, and this spring action is so much leverage which is resisted by the hasp when closed. A padlock 10 or other suitable device may be applied to the staple 9 for locking the hasp and thereby the cover in the closed position.
It will be seen that the fiat ring 5, in addition to holding the gasket in place, prevents any lateral or radial movement of the head 2, even if such movement should be permitted by the clamping mechanism.
The head may be quickly applied and secured or clamped in position to close the barrel hermetically, and may be quickly and easily removed when required for access to the contents of the barrel.
What I claim is 1. A metallic barrel provided with an interior ledge and having a removable conical head Whose edge is extended and overlaps the ledge, angular levers pivoted to the ledge and adapted to overlie a portion of the head, a hasp pivoted to the head and adapted to extend across or overlie the central portion of the levers and to be secured in position to lock the clamps in place, substantially as described.
2. A metallic barrel having an interior ledge, a gasket laid thereon, a metallic ring applied over a portion of the gasket, devices securing the ring and gasket upon the ledge, a conical cover whose extended rim overlies a portion of the gasket and abuts the inner edge of said ring, angular levers constructed of spring material and devices to which they are pivoted, the same passing through the ring and flange, the levers being adapted to fold upon the conical portion of the cover, and a hasp pivoted to the head and adapted to overlie the central portions of the levers and to compress the same upon the cover, substantially as described.
