BRUNO O. REICHARDT, Ol? NEV YORK, N. Y.
BUNGr-LOCK.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that l, BRUNO O. Rmonxnn'r, a subject et the Emperor of Germany, residing at N ew York, in the county ot' New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bang-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention comprehends certain new and uset'ul improvements in bangs and relates more particularly to means whereby a bung may be locked into a barrel to prevent an unauthorized person removing the same.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of a bungl of this nature which shall be of extremely simple construction, cheap to manufacture, and which may be unlocked only by the use oil a key.
A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a barrel bung having a spring-pressed pawl adapted for cngagement with teeth formed on the bushing, said pawl being movable by a key inserted into the bunff.
There is a great need tor some means whereby barrels containingwine, liquor, oil, gasolenc, or the like, may be securely closed and locked so as to prevent their contents being wasted or stolen. My improved bung is designed to answer this purpose.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved barrel bung, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the bung and bushing therefor, and, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of my invention.
Referring` in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a portion ot' a container such as a Cask, tank, or barrel, provided with a circular opening in which is positioned a casing or bushing 2. The bushing comprises an essentially cylindrical body portion, having its interior diameter reduced and threaded` as at 3, whereby a shoulder t is formed. The inner end of the reduced portion 3 is 'further reduced in diameter by Spccicaton of Letters Patent.

Application led December 17, 1912. Serial No. 737,349.
the downwardly and inwardly inclined wall 5 and terminates in a vertical wall G. The bushing 2 formed intermediate its ends, with the annular flange 7, which is apertured to receive the 'lfastening members 8, which secure the flange to the, container 1. A. rubber gasket 9 is interposed between thc interior oit the container 1 and the flange 7 to provide an air-tight joint. It desired, the exterior ot the bushing` may be reduced at its inner end, as shown at 10.
A cylindrical bung 11 having a reduced threaded intermediate portion 1Q and a ii'urther reduced inner end portion 13, is positioned for longitudinal and rotational movement within the bushing 2. The exterior ot the bung` conforms in all essential respects to the interior ot the bushing and therefore when said bung is screwed tightly into position, a close joint is 'formed around its inner end walls, and the shoulder 14 termed by the reduced portion 12 bears tightly against a rubber gasket f1.5, thereby producing an air-tight. joint. The outer end of the bung is lormed with the {lange 1G for engagei'nent with thc outer edge ot' the bushing 2 and is iturthcr provided with the wrench openings 17 to receive a tool, by means oi which the bung` may be either screwed into or out ot the bushing.
My improved locking means includes a pawl 1S mounted intermediate its ends upon the pivot rod 19, which rod extends across a recess 2O formed in one side ol the bung head 11. The recess is enlarged at one end to provide roem for a key, which will be dcscribcd later. A tlat metal spring 21 is fixed at one end to the end wall of the recess 2O and bears at its other end against the pawl 18, thereby holding the same normally in engagement with the teeth 22, formed upon the interior of the bushing 2 adjacent its outer end. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 3, that the teeth 2Q extend `from the shoulder 23 to the outer end of the bung and that the tooth engaging end of the pawl 1S is normally project-ed out oi thc recess 2O into engagement with one ot these teeth. Collars 241; positioned upon the pivot rod 19 hold the pawl 18 away from engagement with the top and bottom walls o'l. the recess Q0. lVhen the bung is at the extremity of its inward movement, the pawl 1S engages the teeth 22 near their inner ends, but it will be seen that since these teeth are o1 an extreme length, it is possible to lock the bung no matteil how far it is screwed into the bushing 2. To provide for disengaging the pawl 18 from the teeth 22, l provide the keyhole 25 opening upon the outer face of the bung and communicating with the recess 20, and the circular portion of the keyhole extends somewhat below the bottom wall of the recess, as indicated at 26. To release the pawl from locking engagement, a suitable key 27 is placed in the keyhole and rotated so as to engage the pawl and rotate it against the pressure of the spring 2l. W hen this has been done, a wrench may be inserted in the openings 17 and the bung rotated, either inwardly or outwardly.
It is to be understood that while have shown and described the preferred embodiment of 'my invention, I do not wish to be limited to this exact construction, and arrangement of parts. H desired, I may apply my improved locking means to bungs of various constructions, which bungs may be, if desired, equipped with suitable faucets or spigots.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is :L-
l. The combination with a container having an opening formed therein, of a cylindrical bushing positioned within said opening, the interior of the bushing being threaded for a portion of its length adjacent its inner end and provided adjacent its outer end with a plurality of longitudinal teeth, a threaded bung positioned within said busliing and provided intermediate its ends with a recess, a pawl pivoted intermediate its ends within said recess and adapted for engageinent at one end with said teeth, means ior holding said pawl normally against the teeth, the bung being formed with a keyhole, 40
and akey adapted to be rotated within said keyhole for the purpose of disengaging the pawl from the teeth.
2. The combination with a container having an opening formed therein, of a bushing positioned Within said opening, the bushing being internally threaded for a portion of its length and provided adjacent itsV outer end on its Vinterior wall with a plurality of longitudinal teeth, a threaded bung posi- 5e tioned within said bushing andA formed intermediate its ends with a recess, said recess opening upon the peripheryy of the bung, a pawl pivoted intermediate4 its ends within said recess, a flat metal spring secured at 5K5 one end to the inner wall of the recess and bearing at its other end against said pawl whereby the latter is held in engagement with the teeth, the bung being formed within a keyhole, a key being adapted to' be ro- 60 BRUNOYO.
