SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 761,241, dated May 31, 1904.

Be it known that I, PHILIP P. MENARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs; and .I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-` scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to bungs and locks therefor, and has for its object .to provide a bung which may be securely locked within its bung-hole, so as to prevent removal of the bung and theft of the contents of the keg or barrel while in storage or transit.

.In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a bung embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a similarsection on line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral l represents a hollow bung suitably tapered to fit within the bunghole of a keg or barrel` andprovided at its outer or forward end with a casing 2, closed A by a suitable cap or cover 3. This cap is provided upon its interior with a lock device 4 of a preferred construction, provided with oppositely-movable bolts 5, adapted to engage loop-shaped keepers 6 upon the casing 2 to lock the cap thereto. This lock is accessible through a keyhole formed in the outer wall of the cap and may be operated by a special form of key.

On the interior of the bung 1 are eyes 7 forming guides for clamping-bolts 8, which are threaded at their outer ends to receive wing-nuts 9. The inner ends of these bolts are provided with right-angularly or laterally bent clamping-arms 10, which are adapted to project laterally from the bung through longitudinal slots 1l formed therein, said slots extended approximately from the center of the bung inwardly and opening through the inner edge thereof.

In the operation of the invention the bung with the cap or cover removed is inserted Within the bung-hole of the keg or barrel With the clamping-arms of the bolts pointing inwardly. When the bung has been fully inserted, these arms are projected outwardly and drawn within the said slots v1l by adjusting the wing-nuts until the said arms are brought into clamping engagement against the inner side of the wall of the barrel. The casing 2 is of greater diameter than the outer end of the bung, and consequently forms a shoulder l2, which bears against the outer 'side of the Wall of the barrel, so that when the clamping-arms are adjusted in the manner described the said shoulder by bearing onthe outer side of the barrel and the arms by bearing against the inner side thereof will securely clamp the bung in position. To effect the removal of the bung, it is simply necessary to relax the wing-nuts until the arms of the bolts are allowed to project beyond the slots, whereupon by the axial movement of the bolts the arms may be made to project inwardly to permit of the withdrawal of the bung. When the arms are fitted within the slots, however, they cannot be turned, and consequently the bung cannot be withdrawn.

When the cap or cover is employed to close the casing.2,"it will be apparent that access to the Wing-nuts will be closed, so that the same cannot be manipulated to release the bung from the barrel. Further, when the cap is so applied to the casing and locked the bung is closed and access thereto cannot be obtained for the purpose of drawing off any of the contents of the keg or barrel. Thus by locking the cap in positionthe keg or barrel may be stored or shipped without liabilityof the contents thereof being tampered with or stolen, as the cap can only be removed by an authorized person possessing the proper kind of key.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction 'and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isw

1. A bung, comprising a bung proper, provided with a chamber or casing, means for fastening the bung accessible through the said chamber or casing,means for closing the chamber or casing, and key-released means for locking said closing means, substantially as shown and described.

2. A bung, comprising a hollow bung proper, provided at its forward end witha casing or chamber and having slots, clamping devices accessible within the chamber and provided with members projecting through the slots to clamp the bung to the keg or barrel,- a closure for the said casing, and key-released 'means for locking said closure, substantially as described.

3. A bung, provided with fastening means for attaching it to a keg or barrel, and a casing provided with keepers therein, and a closure for the casing having locking devices to engagesaid keepers, substantially as set forth.

4. A bung, comprising a hollow bung member formed with slots in its side walls, and having a chamber or casing at its forward end providing an engaging shoulder,keepers within the casing, clamping-bolts having adjusting-nuts accessible in the casing and provided with lateral clamping-arms projecting through said slots, and a cover for the casing having locking members to engage the said keepers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
