UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BETJEMANN, or so AND 38 PENTONVILLE ROAD, COUNTY or MIDDLE- s-nx, ENGLAND. I
MEANS 0R APPARATUS FOR SECURING ORLOCKING UP THE CONTENTS OF BOTTLES AND OTHER HOL- LOW ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,261, dated February '7, 1882.
Application filed July 23, 1881. (No model.) Patented in England January 12, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BETJEMANN, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 36 and 38 Pentonville Road, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means or Apparatus for Securing or Looking up the Contents of Bottles and other Hollow Articles, (for which I hzwe received Letters Patent in England No. 147, dated 12th January, 1881,) of which the following is aspecification.
The invention has for its object improvements in means or apparatus for securing or looking up the contents of bottles and other hollow articles. For this purpose I employ a cap or cover to pass over the neck or top of the bottle or other article with the cork or stopper therein or, if desired, the interior or under side of the cap or cover may be|provided with a suitable spring or other stopperor packing to enable it to act as a stopper. I pass a clip around the neck of the article and under a flange or in a groove formed thereon. In some cases portions of the cap or cover or projections thereon, when the parts are in position on the article to bezsecured, pass over the clip to prevent the latter being forcibly opened out and removed from the article towhich it is applied. A look connected either to the clip or to the cap or cover, or to both, aotsby means of suitable catches to lock the whole of the parts together. When the lock and other parts are permanently connected together I prefer to fix the lock rigidly to one part and to hinge it to the other.
And in order that my said invention may be more clearly understood and readily carried into effect, I will proceed, aided by the accompanying drawings, more fully to describe the same.
1n the drawings, Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, showing my improvedapparatus applied to the neck of a bottle with the cap or cover locked in position over the cork. Fig. 2 is a similar view to the above, but showing the cap or cover turned back, thereby affording facility for removing the cork from the bottle-neck. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is an elevation showing the front of the lock, and Fig. 5 is a plan of parts.
Figs. 6, 7,and 8 represent slightmodifications of my invention.
a represents a bottle-neck, a a flange thereon, and b a cork. c is a cap or cover, which is hinged at c to a lock, (1, and e is a clip fixed rigidly to the look. Theclip e is passed around the neck of the bottle or other article and under the flange a thereon, or in a groove formed in the bottle-neck. The part 0 connected to the cap or cover 0, has fixed thereto or formed thereon a hasp or catch, 0 which, when the cap or cover 0 is in the position shown inFigs. 1, 3, and 4., is securely locked in such position by the bolt of the lock (1. By the aid of a key, 01, the bolt of the look at can, when desired, be withdrawn from the hasp or catch 0 when a spring,f, in the look (see Figs. 1 and 5) will raise the cap or cover 0 a short distance, after which the locking means or the cork can be removed from the bottle.
If desired, the cap or cover a may, as shown at Fig. 6, be provided with a spring stopper or packing, g, in the interior thereof, in which case the necessity for using a separate cork or stopper is avoided.
I would here remark that the lock may be of any desired and suitable construction.
Although I have represented the lock 01 to be rigidly fixed to the clip e and the cap or cover 0 to be hinged to the look, only two of such parts may be fixed together, in which case the hinge 0, connecting the cap or cover 0 to the other parts, would be dispensed with; but the part c and hasp c or other means would be retained, as shown at Fig. 7, to enable it, when desired, to be locked to the look at or, according to another modification, the clip 0 would be separate from the other parts and be provided with a hasp, 0 or other means a to enable it to be locked to the other parts when desired, while the cap or cover 0 and the lock d will be rigidly connected together, as
shown at Fig. 8. In these two last-described I between the said cap and clip, substantially modifications the cap or cover 0 may be made as herein shown and described, and for the to extend more completely around the clip 6. purpose set forth.
Havin thus described the nature of my said 5 invention and the mode in which I carry the JOHN BETJEMANN' same into effect, I would have it understood Witnesses: that what I claim is B. J. B. MILLS, The combination of the cap or cover 0, hasp O. M. WHITE, 0 clip 0, and look 61, receiving the hasp within Both of 23 Southampton Buildings, in the county 10 it and forming the sole means of connection of Middlesex, England.
