rAfrRIoK'MoRAN, or NEW YORK, nv.
HEAD FOR BARRELS, cAsKs, sbo.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,038, dated April 1, 1894.
Application led January 26, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK MORAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful'Improvement in Heads for Barrels, Casks, Src., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention seeks to provide a practical shifting head-plate for all kinds of packages, barrels, casks, &c., which may be quicklyand easily removed and put in place for opening and closing the package without removing the hoops, and which, when applied, will close the package air-tight;v and the invention consists, principally, in providing the head ofthe pack# age, in a suitable opening made therein, with ametallic curbfto be used with a plate adapted to be held in and against the curb by a crossbar and connectingbolt. f f
rlhe invention also consists of the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of 4this specification, in which similar' letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both igures.
Figure l is a plan View of a cask or barrel having my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same.
The body of the package, cask, or barrel A may be of 'the ordinary or of any' improved construction.
In the head B ofthe cask is formed the opening C, which is elliptical in form, and in this opening is secured by the screws a a the curb D, the riange d of which iits closely in the Opening C, whilethe outer surrounding flange, d,
of the curb comes against the inner surface of the headB, and between this latter flange and the head B is placed the packing E, to form an air-tight joint between the curb and the head B, as will be understood from Fig. 2.
F is the shifting plate. This is of about the same form and external measurement as the curb D, and is formed with the ange f,
bolt G-passes, and which bolt receives the nutl b above the cross-piece H, the said cross-piece H being adapted to span the curb D, as shown l in the drawings. A dat elliptical ring, I, is
secured to the outer surface of the head G by the screws c c, so as to cover the upper edge of the flange d of the curb D, and thus make a nice nish to the head of the package; and
upon the shifting plate F is placed the pack-- ing J, which, when the parts are in place and the nut b screwed down, forms an air-tight joint between the plate F and the iilange d of 6o the curb D. The hat ring I also serves as a Vchafe-plate for the ends h of the cross-piece H to rest upon, as will be understood from theV drawings.
In use, to open the cask, it is only necessary to remove the nut b fromY the upper end of the bolt G, which will permit the crosspiece IIMtobe removed and the shifting plate Ff taken outof the cask by passing Ait edgewise and endwise through the curb D. To close the cask, it is only necessary to pass the plate F down through the curb -D and adjust it on the curb, and then place the cross-piece H upon the bolt G and apply and screw down thenut b. In this manner i-t will be seen that the Cask may be very easily opened and closed without removing the head C of the cask, and
and that the curb-plate and cross-piece are strong, cheap, durable, andpractical for their purpose. y
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The head B, formed with the opening C, in combination with the curb D, fitted therein, and the shifting plate F, cross-piece H, and bolt G, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2.` The curb D, formed of flanges d d', and held in the opening C of the head B, with the packing E placed between the head and ange d', and the shifting plate F, formedwith flange f, and provided with packing J and screw-bolt G, in combination with the plate I and cross-piece H, for receiving the bolt G, for holding plate F in place for closing the package, substantially as described.
BATBICK MORAN.
