JAR FASTENING. No. 335,445. Patented Feb. 2,1886.

UNITED STATES HENRY M. GUILD, OF \VOODBURY, NEW JERSEY.
JAR-FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed July 1, 1585.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. GUILD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodbury, in the county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Milk and other Jars, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a fastening for a jar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents atop or plan view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a fastening for a jar or can formed of a clamp which is connected centrally and pivotally with a disk or bearing, the latter being fitted in a recess in the top of the lid, said clamp being adapted to engage with spiral lugs or threads on the jar, whereby the lid is tightly held on the jar and the clamp retains its position.
It also consists in providing the jar with a bail, which is pivoted to the fastening-clamp, so that the jar may be readily carried, and when the bail is not in use it may be folded or swung to or toward the side of the lid or body of the jar.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a jar for milk or other material, and B the lid thereof. In the center of the upper faceof the lid is a recess, 0, into which is fitted a disk or bearing, D, formed of metal or other material, and having pivoted to its upper side a clamp, E, consisting of a strip of steel or other suitable elastic metal or material, whose ends are bent downwardly, the terminations thereof being turned inwardly, forming lips F,which are adapted to engage with spiral lugs or Patent No. 335,445, dated February 2, 1886.
Serial No. 170,333. (No model.)
threads G on the body of thejar. When the lid is fitted in position on the jar, a gasket being interposed between the same, the bearing D is placed in the recess 0 and the ends of the clamp overhang the top of the jar, whereby, by rotating the clamp, its lips engage with the lugs or threads G, and the clamp thus presses the lid on its seat on the jar, tightly closing the latter and surely holding the lid in position, it being noticed that the bearing D rests in the recess 0, and the clamp rotates on the top thereof. In the event ofundue press nre on the lid from within the jar, the clamp E being elastic allows the lid to yield, and thus relieve the pressure, avoiding bursting of the jar. Pivoted to the ends of the clamp is a bail, H, whereby the jar may be readily carried, and when the bail is not required it may be folded to the side of the lid or jar-,aud thus occupy but little space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A jar or can having spiral lugs or threads, and the lid thereof provided with a central recess in the upper face thereof, in combination with a clamp with lips engaging with the lugs or threads and a disk resting in said recess and pivot-ally secured to said clamp, substantially as described.
2-. Thejar A, having spiral lugs and a lid, in combination with clamp E, extending across the lid and having lips F and hail H secured to said clamp E, substantially as described.
H. M. GUILD.
