CHAIN 0R CORD COUPLING.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application led October 15, 1910. Serial No. 587,292.
To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALLEN A. TIRRILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athens, in the county of Bradford and State 'of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain or Cord Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to couplings, and has for its object the provision of a coupling designed primarily for detachably connecting adjacent ends of chains.
The invention comprehends a device simple and cheap in construction, readily applicable to the uses to which the same is to be put, and efficient in operation.
A convenient embodiment of the invention comprises a coupling formed fromv a sheet metal blank having its end portions turned upwardly and suitably fashioned to engage and form seats for the retention of the end links or balls of a chain.
Detail features of the device will be apparent from the specific description hereinafter contained when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and wherein said above mentioned embodiment of the invention is illustrated.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of the device as the same is employed in uniting two sections of a chain, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a coupling detached, ig. 3 is a plan of the blank from which the coupling is formed, and Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are top, side and end views respectively of the coupling.
Referring more specically to the drawings and rst with special reference to the blank shown in Fig. 3, it will be seen that said blank is a flat piece 'of metal A, Iperforated at points near its opposite ends, as at B, and cut away from said perforations outwardly through the ends to provide openings C, bordered by diverging side walls D.
The coupling, as formed from the blank just described, is clearly illustrated in the remaining views of mation being accomplished by curving upwardly and inwardly the end portions of the blank to present the openings C toward each other, and leaving a space E therebethe drawings, such 'fortween for the insertion of the adjacent chain links or balls adapted to lit in seats The apertured portions B assume a position in alinement with each other so that the connection between the end links may pass therethrough, as is obvious.
Owing to the material of which the coupling is formed, the terminal portions G thereof are somewhat yieldable 1n a lateral direction with reference to each other to permit the insertion of the chains, and the inner ends of the converging walls Dcon stitute a contracted throat H adapted to close behind the chain and confine the same in place, at the same time permitting ready uncoupling of the device as occasion may require.
It will be observed that although I have referred to chains herein, the coupling may with facility be used in connection with cords having knotted or otherwise enlarged end portions; also that either in the case of a ycord or chain, the coupling of the sections together is by anvengagement of the same in their natural or normal condition so that a straight pull throughout the length of th distinguished from devices wherein end links or other portions of the sections are turned laterally or offset at an angle relative to the remaining portions of the sections.
It will be clear to those skilled in the art that although I have herein disclosed but a single embodiment of the invention, the latter may be embodied in still other forms and devices without departing from the scope of the claim.
I claim A coupling of the character described, having an offset end portion constituting a seat at its inner side, said end portion being formed with an aperture therethrough and with Aa marginal opening` leading to said aperture, the walls of the device adjoining the marginal opening approaching to form a contracted portion adjoining the aperture, and said walls being yieldable to permit the contracted portion to open and close.
In testimon whereof I atlixmy signature in presence o two witnesses. ALLEN A. TIRRILL.
