To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY LnA'roN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Howard, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidor-Tongs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in tongs and particularly to tongs used in lifting and carrying ouspidors.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and simple device of this character whereby a strong and durable device is set up for properly and sanitarily handling cuspidors.
Another object is to provide a device of this character wherein the parts thereof are formed from single pieces of material, thereby cheapening the manufacture of the device.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cuspidor tongs.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tongs engaged with a cuspidor, the cuspidor being shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which one of the members of the tongs is formed.
Fig. 4: is a plan view of the blank from which the other member of the tongs is formed.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing 10 represents one member of the tongs, and 11 the other member thereof. The member 10 includes a shank portion 12, one end of which is iattened out and bent at right angles to the end, as shown at 13. Adjacent this flattened portion the shank is formed with a pair of centrally apertured wings 14 bent into parallel relation to each other and extending from the shank in the same direction as the angularly bent end thereof. A loop 15 is carried by the other end of the shank, as a hand hold.
The member 11 includes a shank 16, having one end outwardly flared, as at 17', and
' formed with a bifurcation 18. Adjasent this bifurcation, and at the inner end thereof, there is formed a flattened portion 19 in which is produced an elongated 'slot 20 for the reception therethrough of the winged portion of the shank of the member 10. The shank of the member 11, at each side of the slot, is formed with a similar wing 21, these wings being bent to extend in parallel relation to each other and away from the shank. These wings 21 are also formed with apertures for the registering with the apertures of the first wings and the reception of a pivot pin or rivet 22.
Formed integrally on the outer portion of the bifurcated end of the member 11 is an arcuate portion 23 which is bent back onto the bifurcation to serve as a reinforcement thereto, the sides of the inner ends of the arcuate portion being formed with lugs 24 bent around and under the adjacent portions of the bifurcation. This greatly strengthens the bifurcation and retains the arcuate member in proper position on the bifurcated portion of the member 11.
From an inspection of Fig. 2, of the drawing, the operation of the device, in connection with a cuspidor, will be clearly understood.
Particular attention is called to Figs. 3 and 4, wherein are shown plan views of the blanks from which the members 10 and 1l are formed.
Particularly in Fig. 4, the arcuate member and the lugs carried thereby, and the particular construction and arrangement of the parts of the device are clearly set forth.
lWhat is claimed is:
1. As an article of manufacture a cuspidor lifter and carrier including a pair of pivoted members one of which is formed from a single metal blank and comprises a shank portion, a head portion having a bifurcation therein, and being wider than the shank laterally and oppositely extending apertured wings arranged on opposite sides of the shank, and an arcuate portion connected to the outer end of the bifurcation and folded back thereon with its inner curved edge registering with the inner curved edge of the bifurcation, the inner ends of said arcuate portion having lugs folded to embrace the adjacent ends of the bifurcation; the other member comprising a shank portion, a head portion, and wing portions, said first member being formed with an elongated slot between the wings thereof. and receiving the second member therethrough.
2. A blank for forming one .of a pair `oct cuspidor gripping members including a shank having oppositely directed apertured ears on the side edges thereof, one end of ,the shank .being formed with a head having a circular opening therein, the outer edge portion of said head being parallel to the wall lof the awning, whereby .am arcuate portion is formed which is separated from the remainder of the head by transverse fold lines7 and laterally directed tabs on the outer curved edge ofthe arcuate portion disposed outwardly of the fold lines.
