T 0 ca whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES M. Vi-urn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Iiulicators, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to supply an advantageous form of indicator designed particularly for bottles or similar containers adapted to hold poisonous or deleterious substances.

ln carrying out the invention, the construction used is designed with a view especially to cheapness and simplicity so that the indicator may be formed on ordinary bottles, or the like, at only a nominal cost.

For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the fol lowing description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle, showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a section showing the lower portion of the container with the indicator in operative position; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view, the dotted lines indicating the area of an opening at the bottom of the indicator compartment, and through which the indicating member may be originally introduced into said compartment; Fig. 41 is a modification of the invention.

Throughout the following detail descrip tion and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

Specifically describing the invention and referring particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the bottle or container which is preferably of the ordinary kind used to hold poisons or contents of a harmful nature. It is not contemplated in the practical embodiment of the invention to materially modify the bottle construction in any way, so in carrying out the invention, the bottle is preferably formed at its lower end with an extension 2, co-extensive with the sides of the bottle and projecting a short distance below the bottom 3 of the receptacle. The extension 2 is integral, of course, with the body of the bottle 1 and said extension forms an auxiliary indicating compartment which is also provided with a suitable bottom 4. The false bottom 3 of the receptacle 1 is the lower terminal of the main compartment of the bottle and constitutes the top of the compartment in which the indicator 5 is arranged.

The indicator 5 preferably consists of a spherical body so that it may roll freely in the indicating compartment provided by the extension 2 of the bottle 1, and said indicator 5 is advantageously employed in that, in the use of the bottle 1, the indicator 5 is adapted to strike against the bottom or sides of the compartment in which it is mounted, and in this manner creating an audible sig nal. The indicating means, by producing sounds when the bottle is moved preliminary to withdrawing some of its contents, will afford a warning to the user SUffiClGllt to attract his attention to the fact that the receptacle handled by him contains a poisonous or deleterious commodity. The spherical indirector 5 may be blown in the indicating compartmentof the bottle 1, or if desired, said indicator may be introduced into the compartment through an opening in the bottom 1, and said opening subsequently closed by fusing the glass or material of the bottle 1 in any well known manner.

In a further embodiment of the invention,

it is contemplated that the indicator 5 shall he made of some substance affording a perceptible glitter, whereby the user of the bottle 1, will be attracted to the indicator not only by audible sounds due to movement thereof, but by the glittering qualities of the indicating object 5. The indicator 5, when capable of attracting the attention of the user of the receptacle 1 both by sound and sight, affords double advantages in preventing likelihood of accidental use of the contents of the bottle, on the mistaken assump tion that said contents are harmless.

As shown in Fig. 1, if desired, the indicating member 5 may be made of a substance of a different color from the color of the glass from which the bottle is made, for the purpose of rendering said member most liable to attract the attention of the observer.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. A new article of manufacture, consisting of a bottle having a main holding compartment, a supplementary compartment arranged below said holding compartment and having transparent sides, a spherical body loosely disposed within said supplementary compartment and adapted to freely roll against the sides thereof so that it may produce an audible signal and said spherical supplementary compartment and adapted to freely roll against the sides thereof so that it may produce an audible signal, and said 15 spherical body being formed so as to have a glittering appearance and a color to contrast with the transparent sides of the com partment whereby it may attract the eye through said transparent sides and thus 20 serve as a visible signal.
