SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,573, dated March 21, 1905.

Be it known that I, CLAUDE T. RINGo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Rock, in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Paper-Weight, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paper-weights.

The object of the invention is in a novel and practical manner to advertise articles of various kinds, more particularly those that are perishable in character, and at the same time to exhibit and preserve specimens thereof, the presentation of the advertised article to be effected in such manner as to attract immediate attention, and thereby secure the perusal of the advertising matter exhibited upon the paper-weight; furthermore, to impart to the paper-weight characteristics of value that will insure its retention by the recipient.

With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel paper-weight hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, there is illustrated one form of embodiment of the invention capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or changed as to shape, proportion,

and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit thereof.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View in per-, spective of a paper-weight constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view in vertical longitudinal section.

The salient feature of the present invention is the provision of a paper-weight which shall constitute at once a container for an article of vegetation, an advertising medium, and a pen or pencil rack.

A further feature of the invention resides in making the design of the body indicative of the contained article.

In the paper-weight herein shown the form of the body is that of a bale of cotton, and the body contains a cotton-boll; but it will be obvious that by changing the design of the body it may be made to advertise any other article of vegetation.

Referring to the device herein illustrated, the body is composed of a hollow receptacle 1 and a lid or closure2 therefor. The receptacle is rectangular in form and has its exterior provided with continuous parallel grooves 3, which are provided to represent the ordinary bands tied around a bale of cotton, and in the use of the device serve as holders for pens or pencils. Upon one or more sides of the interior of the body advertising matter may be displayed, which may be a colored or appropriately printed field blown into the glass or be a piece of suitable material pasted or otherwise applied thereto, and by placing the advertising matter upon the inner side of the receptacle all danger of injury is obviated. The inner side of the lid or closure 2 is provided with a flange 4:, which is adapted to fit against the open end of the receptacle, and the closure is hermetically secured to the receptacle by means of a waterproof cement, or it may be fused thereto. Prior to securing the lid or closure in position an article of vegetation (in this instance a cotton-boll 5) is placed within the body, and the latter may be exhausted of air and is finally sealed. By excluding all the oxygen from the body the article of vegetation will be kept intact for an indefinite period, and more particularly where it is drythat is, devoid of moisture-as with a cotton-boll.

The shape of the article renders it available for use as a paperweight and being ornamental in character will insureits retention in use by the owner, while the grooves 3 will present very effective racks for pens and pencils. Furthermore, by having the grooves extend entirely around the exterior of the paperweight these are effective for use irrespective of the position the weight occupies upon the table, while the fact that the contained article is loose within the body will permit of its inspection no matter what the position of the weight may be.
