MARKER FOR CIGARS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Application filed January 11, 1917. Serial No. 141,759.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL FELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Markers for Cigars and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a marker for cigars, cigarettes and the like when packed in boxes or other receptacles and the object of this invention is to provide an article of this character to be secured within the box or receptacle, in which the cigars are packed, whereby the revenue stamp, trade-mark or other marking appearing upon the marker will be at all times displayed within the box in view regardless of the amount of cigars removed from the box.
By the use of my improved marker, avoidance of the law by not using the necessary revenue stamps is prevented and when the marker is used for displaying the manufacturers trade-mark, refilling of the box and substitution of cigars of inferior quality by unscrupulous dealers is prevented.
With these objects in view, I have devised the particular arrangement of parts disclosed in the accompanying drawing and more particularly pointed out in the following specification and appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, formingpart hereof:
Figure l is a vertical sectional elevation of a cigar box provided with my improved marker, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the marker.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved marker is applicable to any desired form of box or like receptacle for containing cigars, cigarettes and like articles and I have illustrated it as used in conjunction with the usual form of cigar box, having a top 1, sides, ends 2 and bottom 3.
The cigars 9, which are indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, are packed in layers in the usual manner, and extending between the layers in a series of folds, is a sinuous ribbon or tape 4. This ribbon or tape 1 ex tends transversely of the cigars in the box and from one end 2 of the box to its other end.
Extending transversely of the ribbon or tape are rows of perforations as at 8, forming weakened portions on the tape so that the portions 10, upon which printed matter, such as the revenue marking or trade-mark, etc., is printed, may be detached.
The lower end 5 of the tape is secured in the bottom of the box in any suitable manner, such as by an adhesive 6 and the folds of the tape contacting with the ends of the box? are also adhesively secured to the ends at From the foregoing, the operation of my improvedmarker will be readily understood. When the box is opened, the revenue stamp or other marking on the upper portion 10, will be readily discernible. This can be detached at the weakened portion 8 to reach the uppermost layer of cigars, and when that layer is used the strip beneath that layer can be removed in like manner. It will therefore be noted that I have provided a marker so formed that regardless of the amount of cigars in the box, a portion of the marker is still contained intact in the box so that refilling the box without destroying the marker is prevented.
My improved marker may also be utilized to lift the layers of cigars from the box when each layer is reached.
It is obvious that my invention is not to be restricted to the exact embodiment herein shown but is broad enough to cover all structures coming within the scope of the annexed claim.
7 What I claim is A device of the class described comprising a cigar box, a fiat sinuous ribbon or tape extending from end to end in said box in a series of folds with narrow portions of said ribbon between the folds secured to each end of the box, weakened portions on said strip adjacent the points where said strip is secured to the ends of the box and adjacent the folds, substantially long portions of said strip intermediate the weakened portions extending between the layers of the cigars in the box, the lower endof the strip beneath the layers of cigars being secured to the bottom of the box.
Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 10th day of January, 1917.
SAMUEL FELD.
