To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN ALFRED OARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in door fasteners and alarms therefor, the primary object of the invention being to provide simple and effective meanswhereby a door may be secured in its closed position so that the same can be opened only after great force has been brought to bear against the door, and that when the said door is thus forced an alarm will be sounded, thus notifying the occupant of the room that the door is being tampered with.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention progresses, the improvement consists in the novel construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be fully set forth and claimed.
In the drawings accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a door and easing therefor showing the improvement in position. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the improvement. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view taken upon the line 44 of Fig. 2.
The improvement comprises essentially a plate 1, which is constructed of any suitable material, metal preferred. This plate has one of its ends coiled to provide spaced butts 2 which are adapted to receive a similar butt 3 provided upon a member 4. The said butts are adapted for the reception of a suitable pintle, whereby the members 1 and 4 are hingedly connected together. The member 4 which I will hereinafter refer to as the hinged member, has its edge opposite to that connected with the member or plate 1 oftset, and the said off-set portion is cut to provide the teeth 5. The member or plate 1 is formed with a longitudinally extending opening 6, the latter adapted to receive the headed end of a push button 7 This push button communicates with a bell operating mechanism which is retained in a suitable casing 9, and this casing is sustained upon an off-set finger-l0 carried by a plate 11.
The plate 11 which may be termed the body of the device has its longitudinal ends bent inwardly upon itself to provide ways 11 and 1-2 for the longitudinal edges of the plate 1. The plate 1 has its free extremity formed with elongated openings 13 and 14 which are arranged transversely of or at a right angle to the longitudinal opening 6, and the said member is further provided with an outwardly extending portion forming a finger hold 15, which is arranged at an angle to the plate and approximately central of the said openings 13 and 14. Either of the openings 13, and 14 is adapted to receive a threaded extension 17 formed 1 upon the shank 17 of a hook, the latter be ing provided with the usual bit 16. The threaded extremity of the shank 17 is adapted to be engaged by a suitable thumb nut 17 whereby both the bit and the bolt are adapted to bind against the opposite faces of the plate 1 adjacent the slots thereof and whereby the key member is effectively sustained at a desired position upon the said member 1.
In applying the device, the hinged member 4 is placed against the casing of the door. The door is swung closed so as to embed the teeth of the said member 4 within the casing. The plate 1 and the body 11 are swung at a substantially right angle to the hinged member 4, and the plate 1 is slid in its ways provided by the body 11 to bring the hook in proper position with relation to the key hole in the door and in order to allow the bit of the hook to enter the key hole of the door. When this is accomplished, the key is sustained tightly through the medium of the nut and should an attempt be made to force the door the push button will be contacted with and an alarm sounded. It will be noted also that the bit 16 of the hook will prevent the entrance of a dummy key within the key opening of the lock, so that the said lock can not be tampered with.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain, without further detailed description.
It is to be understood that the device is primarily intended for use by travelers and it is to be further understood that while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the improvement, as it nowappears to me, changes in the minor details of construction which fall within the scope of the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described the said'invention, what I claim is 1. In a devicefor the purpose set forth, the combination with a plate, a hinged member connected with the plate, said hinged member having one of its ends ofi-set and provided with teeth, a slidable member mounted upon the plate, an alarm carried by the slidable member and a hook also carried by the slidable member, and adapted to be inserted within the key hole of a door after the teeth of the hinged member have been forced into engagement with the jamb of the door when the door has been swung closed.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a plate, a member hingedly connected with the plate, said memberhaving oneof its ends ofiset and formed with teeth, the plate being provided with an elongated opening, aheaded push button within said opening, a slidable member mounted upon the plate, an alarm carried by the slidable member and adapted to be actuated by the push but-ton, the said slidable member having elongated openings, a hook bit having a shank adapted to engage with the walls of one of the openings, means for securing the shank upon the slidable member, and a finger hold for the slidable member.
