PORTABLE DOOR LOCK AND ALARM` (Appne'azion mea Apr. 21, 1900.) (No Model.)
NiTn STATES PATENT Orar 11;;
ANTHONY L. SHORE, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
PORTABLE DOOR LOCK AND ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,523, dated August 7, 1900. Application lecl April 21,1900. Serial No. 113,726. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that l, ANTHONY L. SHORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Door Locks and Alarms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable vothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention has for its object to provide an improved portable door-lock especially adapted for use by traveling rnen and tourists or other persons who are obliged to travel from place to place, the device serving to secure the doors of their rooms in such manner that they cannot be opened by the manipulation of the ordinary door-lock.
To the above ends the inventionconsists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
This invention relates yto the same class of door-locks or door-securing devices set forth in my pending application, Serial No. 6,677, iiled February 27, 1900.
The present invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout both Views.
Figure l is a horizontal section through a portion of a door and a door-frame, showing my improved lock applied in working position thereto; and Fig. 2 is a similar view but illustrating diiferent positions of the parts.
The numeral l indicates a portion of an ordinary door, and the numeral 2 indicates a portion of an ordinary door -frame having the door-stop strip 3, against which the door closes in the ordinary manner. In the construction illustrated in Fig. l the door-frame is also shown as provided with casings 4 5, while in the construction illustrated in Fig. 2 the inner side of the door-frame is shown as extending flush with the inner surface of the door l. In both views the numeral 0 indicates an ordinary latch-plate, having one or more passages 7for the latch or lock bolt, the door-frame being recessed at 8 in line with the said perforation 7.
Of the parts of the portable lock the character c indicates a screw-threaded stem ,which terminates at its inner end in a flattened section d', having a laterally-projecting detent or lug a2. The flattened portion ed is adapted to extend between the latch-plate 7 and the adjacent free portion of the door 1, and the detent d2 is adapted to be inserted through the perforation 7 and into the recess 8. The said detent must of course be so applied while the door is swung open. Then the door is swung closed, the device is secured in position.
The character b indicates a reversible angle bracket or plate, which is perforated, as shown at b', and is provided with a foot or bent portion b2. In applying the device to a door which stands offset from its frame or from the casing thereof, as shown in Fig. l, the foot b2, of the bracket b is turned inward for contact with the door, as shown in said Fig. l. Where the casingis not provided or where the door and its frame extend flush at the inner side, the bracket h is applied, as shown in Fig. 2, with its foot b2 turned outward.
Outward of the bracket h a securing head or knob is screwed onto the stem a and applied to clamp the angle-bracket b in working position. J y
An alarm device in connection with the above lock is desirable, and hence I employ a small bell o of the type used as bicyclebells, and this is detachably applied to the stem ct, being screwed onto the said stem. For an important purpose a coiled springf is applied between the bracket b and the knob or bell c, it being understood that the said bell is thus employed to serve the double function of an alarm and a stop. To actuate the bell automatically when an attempt is made to open the door, a small bell-crank lever gis shown as pivoted to one section of the bell, one arm thereof being connected by a short link g to the bell-actuating lever f. The other arm g2 of the said bell-crank is so set that it normally engages or stands very close to the outer surface of the bracket or plate b, either as shown in Fig. l or as shown in Fig. 2. To lock the bell c in the position in which it is adjusted, a thumb-nut 7c is preferably applied to the stem a, the saine being normally screwed against the said bell, a shown in the drawings.
'scope of my invention. -alarmffeature is'not desired an ordinary knob `the door may take various forms. might be placed directly against or in contact It is important to here note thatrthe foot b2 of the angle plate or'bracket b stands at such distance from the perforation b that when the said bracket is turned with its foot outward, as shown in Fig. 2, either the said bell or the thumb-nut Zt, according towhich may be applied inward, clears or'passes free ofthe 'said outturned foot portion. These relative dimensions are necessary in order to permit the said bracket I) to be reversed.
The action will be substantially as follows:
With the device appliedeither as Yshown ini Fig. l or as shown in Fig. 2 the door may be moved slightly inward, and this movement is sufcient to cause the bracket l) to engage and:move-the bell-crank g2, thereby imparting -movemenbto the bell-actuatingleverl f',
withrthe' result that the bell-will be rung and @an alarm given. However, bnt-slightfmovement of the Vdoorispe-rmitted, for the-reason that' the spring j' is capable of-but little comkpressiomand when compressed toits limit becomes a rigid intermediate stop and prevents-further opening movement of the door.
The device/above described is ofv con rse capable of considerable modification withinpthe For instance,f`if.the
orfnnt-may be substituted forthe bell. It
-will-a-lso'be-understood that'even if-the bell be provided fthe -connections for actuating lthe-same bythe initial openingV movement of The bell aviththe angle-plate'b, andlthefspring might be-'placed 'betweenlthe bell and the'thumbninth, inwhich case `bythe-initial opening Vmovementof the doorthe bell-crank g-g2 pressed to -its limit, -substantiallyas described.
2. The combination with the screw-threaded stem a flattened at a and provided with the detent-lug a2, of the reversible anglebracket Z2,- bz, thebellcvadjustablylseclurable on `said stem a; thespring-f-betweensaidbell land said bracket bfand'-thefbellJcranklever g connectedf'to the belllleverffandactu-ating the :saidl bell under theinitial'openiirginove- `ment of Ithe door, the said vparts operating substantially as described.
'3. The combinationlwithf the detentlsecun able lbetween the free edge of door-audits frame, of a bell, a nut land -faspringonl-the saidstem, said spring fperniittin-g -fa limited opening movement-of the door-ran'dithen: acting' as astop, and bell-actuating connections operate'diby the initialf` openingmovernent olf l the door, isubstantiallywas described.
In testimonywhereof iI V-attix' my signature inlpresence of twowitnesses.
