LIFTING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TRENTON THoMAs HAYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunnyside, in the county of \Varren and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lift- .ing Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in lifting devices for pans, boxes, jars, buckets, etc., and has for its object to provide a device of this character that can be quickly and easily attached or detached from any article on which it may be used and it can be so adjusted to fitvarious sizes of articles.

Another object of the invention is' to provide a lifting device which will possess advantages in points of efliciency and durability and is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

Vith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device showing the same applied to a bucket. Fig. 2 is an end elevation; and Fig. 3 is ,a detail perspective of the supporting bar.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 indicates a cross bar having a jaw 2 pivotally mounted on one end and a second jaw 8 slidably mounted on the other end which is provided with a pivot pin 4 adapted to engage in the notches5 formed on theunderside of the bar at one end thereof. These jaws 2 and 3 are bifurcated as shown at 6, said cross bar being disposed in this bifurcation as shown in Fig. 2. Secured to the upper free ends of the jaws are the chains or cords 7 having their free ends secured to each end of a handle 8. Slidably mounted on the upper ends of the jaws are the locking links 9, which are adapted to engage in the serrations 10 formed on the upper side of the bar 1 to lock said jaws against movement when attached to an object. In using the device upon small objects a cross piece 11 is secured in the jaws so that they will not spread.

In Fig. 1 the device is shown ready for use. I11 using the device the cross bar 1 is placed 'on top of the object to be lifted, the jaw 3 is then adjusted to the size of the object and the handle 8 is pulled upwardly until the jaws have firmly grasped the object. The jaws are held in position by sliding the links 9 down on the jaws until they engage the serrations 10 011 the upper side of the bar 1.

From the above it will be seen that I have invented a simple and useful lifting device that can be quickly and easily attached or detached from any articlethat is to be lifted.

While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the same.

Having thus described this invention, I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a cross bar having transverse notches formed therein at one end, a jaw pivoted to said bar at one end, a second jaw slidably mounted on the other end of said bar, a pivot pin carried by said second jaw adapted to engage in the notches formed in the bar, a cross piece secured in said jaws to prevent spreading when applied to small objects, chains secured to the upper free ends of said jaws, a handle secured to the upper free end of said chains to operate the jaws, and means for locking said jaws against movement when applied to an object.
